I'm planning on installing a new set of plugs in my Boxer. Has anyone used the BR8EIX NGK Iridium plugs in their injected Boxer's? Or is there another type or heat range that I should be considering instead? What gap setting are you using?
Gary, I have just installed the same plugs in my 83 BBi. I haven't run the car yet........still working on the distributor. The gap was that of the plug, in the box........I didn't measure it. These are the correct plugs.......the platinum ones are now superceeded by these iridium ones. I plan on re-evaluating the plug color, after 1K miles.......to see if the heat range is OK.
Here's my two cents: An NGK 8 sounds pretty cold to me, but I have a Columbo V-12, not a BB. I use BPR6ES plugs. I'll be upgrading to Platinum for the next plug change. My factory manual suggests a 0.025 gap. The BPR6ES plugs come with a 0.035 gap, and the rule-of-thumb is not to vary the out-of-the-box gap by more than 0.008. So I go for 0.027. There's a huge difference between normal plugs and platinum plugs. There's almost no difference between platinum and iridium. In fact, iridium plugs actually use an alloy of iridium and platinum. There's more marketing spin in an iridium plug than there is actual iridium. By the way, NGK plugs have a heat rating that runs opposite to Bosch plugs. For NGK, a 6 is hotter than a 7. For Bosch, the 7 is hotter than a 6. If you want to get some more horsepower, index your plugs using thin spark plug washers. (I'm actually surprised that so few people on Ferrarichat index their plugs.) You'll get at least as much as you would from a K&N air filter. --Matt
OK- thanks! I'm going to give them a try too. I searched on Froogle and found a great deal at Rock Auto: http://www.rockauto.com/dbphp/mfr,NGK Only $6.22 each! I just had the distributor checked out and fixed by my mechanic. The advance wasn't working on mine either. I just got the car back on Friday and boy what a difference in the upper end rpm power with the advance working correctly! He also installed an MSD ignition box and coil. Since the car currently has a set of plain old Champion RN7YC plugs, I thought I would give the NGK ones a try.
Gary, Keep us posted on what the shipping charges come out to. I'm curious how this price compares with http://ngk.com/default.asp Dave
Dave, Rock Auto charged $7.95 for shipping. The total bill = $81.74 SparkPlugs.com price is $6.95 per plug= $83.40 + shipping costs. Gary
