I’ve always wondered about boxer trim cars. Most of have seen them but what is the history behind it & why did Ferrari chose to paint the cars like this? Makes me wonder if it would ever try to make a comeback on a modern F car. Any thoughts?

Ferraris that I’ve seen in boxer trim.

    308 GTS/B
    328 GTS (EBay awhile back)

Pininfarina (the primary Ferrari design firm) came up with idea to use the lower black trim when designing the exterior of the first Boxer. As far as I know, this trim was standard on all 365 and 512 carbed Boxers but a significant proportion of 512 injected Boxers came from the factory without it. As to cars other than the Boxer, I believe that the Boxer trim may have been an available option on 308 GT4s and early 308s. Of course, anybody can add it to their car on an aftermarket basis, and undoubtedly, some people have done so.

I am restoring a 365 boxer and to me that lower portion just has to be in satin black just as the factory intended.

Not only was the matt-black a stylistic touch by Pinninfarina to make the 365 BB even more slender, it was also a practical feature because the nose and rear valence were constructed of fibreglass (these essentially were the bumpers), so the matt-black colour was carried along the rest of the car to make a pleasant line.

The 308 GT4's had it purely for decorative reasons, as with the 308's and I've even seen one 328 with Boxer trim (not the one you mention on Ebay, but a GTB). It really looks good on that.

I don't think the Mondial ever had that. A while back I put a Photoshop version on this board that I created, that turned out really nice. I think if I had a Mondial (especially the early one with the black bumpers), I would have it done up with the trim.
