So how do you know if your car actually had boxer trim when it left the factory? I applied for and received the new Heritage Certificate (Interior/Exterior colors only) from Ferrari, and it states the exterior color of my car as Rosso Chiaro 5995190, which is correct for a 1979 BB. But, I have a service receipt from the late 80s, for repainting the black bottom to red. Theres no mention on the Heritage Certificate of it originally having a black bottom. Its certainly possible the car was delivered all red, then painted with a black bottom by the first owner, then repainted all red by the next, but how do you know, or find out for sure? John
The standard painting on a Boxer was the black bottom. Customers could ask the factory to do something different, of course. As to finding out how the car came from the factory, I don't know unless you can access the original order sheet or build sheet? It is my belief that very few carbed BBs were ordered with a non-black bottom, this being more prevalent with BBis.
Trace the ownership and contact a PO. Mine is black as well and I suspect it to be original or very old. The original owner is dead but I may have another way to find out at least in my situation by contacting the shop that serviced the car since new, which is Foitek in Zurich. They remember my car and the PO's well but I never thought to ask about the black bottom.
That's true...the Heritage Certificate does NOT confirm, or deny, the Boxer Trim option, on my #22127 and #22641.....
The all one color look for the body seemed more modern when it was offered on the BBi models in 1982. All the old Ferrari literature features the 'black bottom' look for carb models. The 70's Ferrari models were not offered with the variety of factory changes that people tend to think was normal today. Some unusual colors yes but the two tone look was part of the Boxer 'look' in that time. Always worth a try is contacting the original dealer for a Ferrari to see what they remember. Having the bottom repainted would imply maintaining a previous feature of the car. CH
I know my car (79 BB) had a black bottom when new because Amerispec supplied me with the federalization pictures, and you can clearly see the black bottom.
I'm fortunate to have a copy (thanks Dick Fritz) of the factory invoice for my Boxer showing the optional ALL RED (without black bottom) paint job that was special ordered, along with an optional leather headliner. I've even got the air freight invoice for the shipment of my car from Italy to JFK. PS: I love the disclaimer at the bottom of the invoice: "... can not be sold or operated on public roads." Thanks for all the input guys. Since I do have the invoice for painting the black bottom to red, Ill agree it was likely originally a black bottom car. And as I like the black bottom look, Ill probably have it redone. Does anyone know the paint code for the black on a 79 BB? Thanks again, John PS. Thanks for posting your invoice Gary. Interesting reading, and nice price!
Sorry John/Pete, Been a little busy... Heritage caertificates will not tell you whether or not the car came from the factory with the Black boxer trim or not, as such records were rarely kept...it was all a bit ad hoc even in the mid to late '80's. The simple answer to your question is you'll never know for sure unless you trace the original owner who may have picked it up from the factory or may have the first photographs of delivery. Pure hear say -but many first owners saw the car for the first time at dealerships and did not like the black bottom and had the dealership paint the cars before taking delivery ? I have no way of knowing if this is true or not. JTR - it seems likely that your car may have had the Boxer trim as it was repainted Rosso Corsa by DP in the early 80's - Correct ? Argento
John, when I had my bumpers redone the body man simply painted them in 2 stage (base clear) going with the black base then applying the clear with a flattening agent in it to come up with a matt black. The finish is great with the base clear, it wont fade and it matched the sides perfectly. Its not flat and its not satin really, just closer to flat with a slight shine to it.
Thank you Paul. Argento, the painting receipt I have is dated 1987/88, I think. I dont remember exactly, and Im stuck out on this boat for the next two weeks or so, before getting back home again. What record of the Boxer trim paint being done in the early 80s do you have? My receipts/service records only go back to 87 or so. John
You are right about the sheen Paul, as others have commented they can see highway striping reflected in it...
