mine are getting ready to be sent to steve k. (surfacemaster) in orange county ca.

he has gone over a very interesting process for the re-finishing...i look forward to getting the wheels out to him in the next 60 days.

i think they can be done properly for $400-600 each assuming the chrome is not needy.

I will have to check....yet mine are the 'stock' units 1981 512 bb...should I expect significant price differences between the two metals? Estimates have ranged from 150-900 each wheel. Very wide range......Thanks.

The Boxer Cromodora wheels are an alloy of magnesium. If not painted, they will corrode. That is why the factory did not polish the wheels. When refinishing the wheels make sure the bare surface is very clean and free of corrosion, otherwise the corrosion will return under the new paint.

He does seem to be one of the very, very few who understands how to do these wheels correctly.

The center cover is stainless, not chrome plated as it might appear. There they're damaged, I've got a large stash of NOS bb parts that you can draw from, if need be.

The only way I have seen Mag wheels refurbished so there has been little to no corrosion soon after painting is:
    1. strip all the old paint off completely
    2. put the wheel through a powder coat baking process as many times as is practical. I have had it suggested to me that 4 or 5 times is sufficient.
    3. powder coat or paint IMMEDIATELY after coming out of the final oven bake (after cooling).
    4. bake as required if powder coating

I prefer the powder coat as it gives a much harder finish that most paints IMO.

Phil I did my cromodora 308 wheels more than 12 years ago and they are still nice. I used zinc primer first then epoxy primer and finally paint. Never had corrosion problem.

The problem with powder coating magnesium wheels is if the wheel ever corrodes under the powder coating, you will have a HORRIBLE time removing the powder coating to repair the damage. Do not ask me how I know this.
