These words in the article remove any sympathy most people could have for him.

... ejecting the driver who was not wearing a seatbelt.

Yep, no sympathy here. Driving requires personal responsibility to protect yourself, just like they tell you before a fight....."protect yourself at all times"

The passenger compartment of that car is totally intact...he could have just walked away if he had buckled up.

He had no belt and didn't die after that?!?!? I thought for sure he must have had a belt on to survive. Holy cow that is a crazy crash to survive. Glad no one died...inside or out of the car.

Looks like a pretty horrific accident to be in.... could have happened to any number of us here. Yeah, he had no belt on, which could have helped him, but he didn’t wear it, but I don’t think we should be focusing on that. We should focus on the fact that the newer cars are that much safer than the old that would have absolutely disintegrated in such a high speed roll, and marvel at the fact he is still with us. I’ve had similar rolls at a track, but it’s rare to see one on the roads where on the whole, even the most daring travel at lower speeds than track speeds (your honour!). Lucky man indeed

An easily avoidable death. Always sad if it happened to a good person. Using the seatbelt is not optional.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

Agree that he had a death wish to be driving, particularly in that manner, without a seatbelt.

Impossible to know, but who knows for sure if, in this particular case, perhaps being thrown early from the vehicle may have limited his injuries? Perhaps he was spared some of the impact and shearing forces if he was thrown early. Who knows? Still not a good risk to take, though.

We had another thread somewhere, on it.

You recall Masten Gregory was the last Formula 1 driver to refuse belts, and would actually jump out of the car before a wreck, if he saw one coming.

Watching the video, two schools of thought, as him ejected on the first roll might well have reduced his injuries. While the compartment did indeed survive intact there were THREE horrific end over end rolls and that's they type of thing that could well snap your head or neck easily.

Agree on the Lotto comment but his boxing winnings are well into that kind of income already.

Looked like a Michael bay movie...I expected the Ferrari to turn into a fighting robot half way through the rolling.

What is with dumbasses like this guy and Kevin Hart not wearing seatbelts? Didn’t everyone under the age of 50 grow up wearing them? Why stop wearing them when driving like a madman?

But what if Big Tex is right? What if he survived because he wasn’t wearing a seat belt, because he was in a Spider and was thrown clear through the open roof, before the massive impacts and deceleration? What if not wearing a seat belt actually saved his life?

In the absence of knowing more facts, for example about when exactly he was thrown clear, it certainly is a theory to be taken seriously. Just because seat belts make 99.9% or whatever of accidents safer, doesn’t mean this isn’t one of the outliers.

I’m not sure I’d have wanted to be strapped into that car as it did its thing, even with airbags. Lots of horrendous injuries in cars less wrecked than that.
