My wife wants a Boxster to drive to work. Only about 5 miles each way plus miscellaneous errands during the day.

I find you can get a serviceable car for ~$22k. Maybe a 2001 with about 30,000 miles.

Do you think a Boxster has any reasonable life expectancy with a non-enthusiast-woman driving it day to day?

I'd, of course, keep the basic maintenance up on it.

Certainly. You will at some point have a rear main seal leak, but it's not a big scary deal like some make it out to be. I had a an 01 and loved it. Comfortable to drive, loads of room compared to the miata and very reliable. Other than the rear main seal and a few odds and ends I didn't have any problems at all and I drove it HARD. I put 35,000 miles on it in a year.

    Uro,

Buy it for her. She will love it. We have a Boxster with 160,000 miles on it. Bought the car brand new. ZERO PROBLEMS. Of those miles, my mother has put at least 130,000 of them on the car (She LOVES it & says that she never knew she could feel that way about a car....)

I will own that car forever.

Because of simplicity and lower price, I'm thinking Boxster vs the "S". Would you say the regular Boxster is easier to live with than an "S"?

Easier? I'd say it's just as easy to live with. I've had both and the S does have more power. Aside from extra grunt when you want it, I actually prefer the 5-speed for in town non-agressive driving.

If this is going to be a daily grocery getter I'd try to find one like my 01. Some things to consider:

17" wheels ride nicer around town than the better looking 18"s.

An 03 regular boxster can be had for only a few thousand more than an 01/02 and has color-keyed vents and spoilers and a glove box and glass rear window.

Full leather is nice, but it's more of a pain to clean and take care of.

At that time my 01 had not had the RMS issue. It later did, was fixed under warranty and was a non-event.

Do the RMS fail catastrophically or do they just mark their spots in the driveway?

Mine just marked it's spot with about a dime size drop a day. Never heard of a catastrophic failure with RMS. There have been numerous people who have had catastropic failure(buddy of mine was one...03 S with 15,000 miles) but those seem to be mostly intermediate shaft failure.

The RMS repair costs $900 CAD and they have a new seal that works. No worries...........could be Kitty Fishsticks marking his spot.

Guys, I had her look at this one also, and she seems to like it equally, all things considered.

Advantage of this one (from her perspective):

    -Its an "S"

-In Atlanta so I could pick it up tomorrow

-In Atlanta so I could actually inspect it myself

-About same price as the white one considering new tires and shipping.

    Disadvantage:

-black interior which is not her fav, really likes the tan interior in the white one

-silver outside, that WAS her fav, til she saw the white one.

-possibly not quite as tidy as the white one

Seriously, I may go to Atlanta tomorrow to get this one, what do you guys think??

I'd go for the S, the stock one feels nice except that it's too weak. Of course, the wimminz tend to prefer cute cars over actually fast cars, but if you're going to drive it at all, I'd get the silver S.

2400 "more" dollars gets you more than an more-car-for-the-money-and-better-in-the-long-haul "S" - it gives you both peace of mind.

I love the white color, BUT that silver S rocks, I like the Black int. way better than that common grey color.
Also an "S" has way more power and torque. 3.2 compared to 2.7
