OUTSTANDING stuff. The related use of throttle and steering for me is the most interesting thing. The white socks with leather shoes leaves something to be desired. I guess no one is perfect.

You were right, the footage is awesome and I think I've worn my computer out watching it. As for the eyes they are great. Easily the best money I have ever spent on anything (including the Ferrari). I will have to stop by some time though for an experts second opinion.

    Great video.

Proof that anyone that thinks the NSX is a bad car just doesn't know how to drive.

Dont be hatein but... the mighty Ayrton seems to blow it on the apex out section of several turns where he should be full throttle even before the mid-point apex. He has to lift to keep the car on the track. Flame suit on.

Good video. Thanks for posting it!
Wonder what sort of tires were on the rear. They went away really fast. Then again he did smoke those bags pretty good for the first half of the lap.

and you can see the well documented throttle blip approaching mid corner, to spool up the turbos a little in readiness for full power application. And ideally the throttle should never be fully closed if avoidable... left foot braking is a common way of going fast in turbos too.

You don't do that blipping on non turbo cars for fast lap times.

Aircon is gonna love this thread. :D

Noone really knows the reason behind Senna's throttle blipping. It may or may not be a product of the turbo days of F1, but regardless he continued to do it afterwards. It may be to do with adjusting and / or feeling the balance / limits of the car.

Whatever the reason, it resulted in very high fuel consumption and lost him several races.

well, bugger me. I thought NSX's were blown... how come they're so silent yet so fast?

Yep, hands up. Wrong! (God how aircon will love that, but at least I'm not wrong about an F-Car!!)

But I just read the Ayrton Story so it's all fresh in my mind, and it says in detail all about how his throttle blipping (in F1 cars) set him apart from his rivals in keeping turbos spinning and getting more power earlier than others...

I can only guess the NSX in the video handles/understeers so badly he's fishing for front end grip/breaking the rear away with the throttle.

Have you checked out the Senna video? My favorite part is his downshift at Monaco (I think?) where he does it in the blink of an eye. Really cool.

Maybe he was trying to induce some oversteer to point the car with the throttle blipping. I am going to give it a try at the track next week to see if it might work on the 360C into the fast T10. Will have to be careful, otherwise I'll have a very close up view of the inside wall.

    Hi Wayne

errr. I think the 360C will spit you into the scenery if you try that!!

The NSX is a softly spring road car with road tyres and rubber bushes... the 360C is not... smooth is fast...

left foot braking really helps the 360C, if done carefully, it controls the awkward pitch sensitivity a 360C has and greatly settles the entry to mid corner... and with only 2 pedals, it lends itself to it.

I believe that what this video best illustrates is that there are no hard and fast rules to driving. What works on one car does not necessarily work on another. Ayrton is clearly demonstrating the ability of a world class driver. I do not believe that in this footage he was after absolute lap times however he does show himself to be a master at handling the changing conditions of the machine. Moreover he climbs out cool as a cucumber as if he just finished a leisurly trip. Most passengers would have to be extricated in a cold sweat.

Now for my opinion on what is going on. I believe that the fairly large lifts seen in mid corner are to help do away with the natural understeer that is present on a street car with street tires. The reason the lifts are so large and pronounced is because of the relativly soft suspension of the road car he is driving. It is necessary to lift this much to induce the type of weight transfer required to change the attitude of the machine. Note two other things that show the touch of a master. Each lift is matched with a calculated application of steering input. Secondly, the lift is momentary followed by a confident and decisive application of throttle. Where most people get into trouble is that they do something and then wait for the car to respond. Here, Ayrton is well ahead of the car always working the many controals to stay on the edge of adhesion.

The car that Senna is driving in that video is the Japan-only NSX-R. It is the harder edged version of the NSX, with suspension and wheel and tire upgrades and reduced weight compared to the base model - certainly no softie.

Be that as it may, it is still a road car and miles softer than a purpose built race car on slicks.
