"He predicted forces will move to the West Coast from the East since threats in Europe have been replaced by concerns emerging from across the Pacific. In addition, more forces could move south, where land is cheaper than in the Northeast." China?
That's just the closures - a lot of other sites are losing lots of staff (and some are gaining) through realignment. Under "Germany, Korea, Undistributed" category there are a total of 13,503 positions lost. That's 14,171 military members moved elsewhere (middle east?) and 668 civilian(contractor) positions added. I work for the military and I'm nnot currently directly affected. I'm sure the list will be challenged and modified, Conn was hit hard but I don't see both Groten and Portsmith closing... I have seen a lot here to indicate something else is developing anyway - shifting in staff and access is disconcerting. I need to refresh my resume I think just to keep options open. Anyone wants the complete list with all the numbers I have a PDF, though it's probably available online too. Chelle
Simpsons Fans: there really IS (was, I guess) a Navy Reserves station in Lubbock Texas! I've seen it with my own eyes.
i work at the Navy and Marine Corps Reserve Center in San Diego and it'll be interesting to see how we are affected with the closings of the Encino and Los Angeles reserve centers. We're currently experiencing a lot of staff cutbacks here, happening over the course of the next few months. My department alone is going from 13 to 6. Casey
If it goes throug as listed now I expect to see quite a few new co-workers. Looks like the west coast will be getting busier.
I used to be a Civil Servant for the Navy, then I 'jumped ship' to work as a DOD contractor. For us, business is booming and we're expanding. Civil Service is downsizing BIG-TIME. Many DOD efforts are going straight to contractors and bypassing Civil Service centers to get work done. By cutting out the middlemen (who brought nothing to the table anyway), more dollars go into the hands of the Contractors who did all the work anyway and were the true SMEs of the systems/products provided to the DOD community. A great deal of the cutbacks were in Reservist bases - few active-duty stations were hit hard. This makes sense, if Reservist activities are being shuffled to active-duty bases. HUGE consolidation in DFAS centers - I'm guessing they'll all be centralized, modernized, and automated to save huge $$$. The only big surprise I saw was Portsmouth.....I guess the Navy has no need for shipbuilding besides Newport News. Lots of Navy functions are being consolidated at Jacksonville and Norfolk. These communities are already strained with huge bases, and the greater concentration of military resources there makes these communities a much bigger target of terrorists.
