Really nice work. How many miles on the car? Did you rebuild the diff while you had it apart to re-seal? I think it has clutch packs inside? I spoke with an M5 dismantler this morning about an S62 for my E38, and apparently sometime in mid-2000 BMW upgraded the oil rings which cuts down on oil consumption. Then in mid 2001 upgraded the spring plates in the VANOS system (and added an oil compensator to pressurize the system on start-up) which cut down on the typical VANOS rattle. Seems the chain guides last a lot longer in these than in the M62. Maybe because it runs cooler? Awesome pics thanks again for sharing.
Have owned an '03 M5 since new, now at 98K miles. Mine has required none of this work, currently as dry as a bone. Fantastic car! Only thing that interests me at present in 4 door guise is a Giulia Quattrofoglio - totally different I realize..... Nice pics though and nice work. Cost? Bet it's in the "if you have to ask........." category.
Hey guys, Just a reseal on the diff. I heard the same thing on the upgrades during production but even an 03 I've see consume a quart every 1k miles The car had 78k miles but has had nothing but the oil changed...... every 10-12k miles. Final bill was 9,800. Delivery prep. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I have a Jan 2002 production, owned since 2007. Current mileage is 78k, it uses less than 0,5 liter of oil between changes which typically happen at 7-8.000 mile intervals. Changed three of the bushings each side to Powerflex a year ago and have two new X5 control arms lying around that will go in this summer. Other than that, the only broken part has been the thermostat. Clutch and visco clutch were changed last year together with a new windscreen and diff/gearbox oil change. I have no leaks, front or rear and even the aircon hasnt needed recharging for +5 years My first e39 M5 from 03/1999 used oil, about one liter every 1.500 km's so does seem the extra cylinder ring introduced with the facelift made a difference.
