Is that gold coating on the freshly stripped wheel similar to the Dow7 magnesium treatment/preservative?

That’s a ton of work for the wheels. Is there no easier way to get the paint off? Why can’t you just bead or sand blast them?

You can’t sand blast magnesium it is way too soft and will pit like crazy. Plastic media maybe depends on the wheel and how it has been previously refinished. Most aren’t refinished properly. Bradan does the correct job.

That's true but I glass bead blasted a set of mine as final prep once the bulk of the material was removed. No issues. You just need to reduce the pressure.

That coating is on top of the white primer.

Here is what Dow 7 looks like (it's a chemical surface conversion done in a bath)

You're right, seems like the wheels may have been painted gold at some point. Thanks for that picture of the Dow 7.

Correct guys the wheels have been painted at some point.

I've tried chemical stripping, sanding, and glass dust blasting. Right now we just use a combination of the methods based on how many times the wheels have been painted. We try to avoid media blasting to preserve the factory dow 7 coating if its still there.
