Lets suppose a real Dumb*ss decides the level of his pool is too low. So Dumb*ss throws a hose in and gets on F-Chat and forgets about the hose 'til this morning, uh, I mean the next morning, hypothetically speaking of course.

    Here are the facts.

    Pool volume 22,000 gallons.
Pool temp prior to brain freeze 84 degrees F
Poll temp after brain freeze 80 degrees F
    incoming water temp 67 degrees.

Assume heater not running,(although of course it was, hypothetically speaking)
    Assume no convection heat loss.

Q: How many gallons did Dumb*ss waste into the woods?
Q2: How lucky is Dumb*ss that his wife and kids are at the beach house and did not witness this?

    Yours,
    Dum...I mean UroTrash

Depends how much full in the pool to start with, assuming 90% full, about 4000 gallons.
Depends on whether or not your, I mean Dumb*ss's wife and kids like to taunt him with examples of his stupidity. In this case I'd guess quite likely, therefore he's extremely lucky, unless of course said wife and kids read a certain Internet forum, in which case this thread is just another example to add to the above display of stupidity :D

Hypothetically speaking, the pool was only down 1.5 inches, likely, 98-99% full already.

Still close enough. Thanks. Guess it needs some more Baquacil. Hypothetically.

Thank God Dumb*ss's family would rather be banned from the mall than read F-Chat.

    Too many unknowns.

    Missing data:

Length X Width of pool in feet
Water line to the top of pool tile or deck in inches prior to filling

So I'll go with this.... (are we on a water meter? :D )

    Garden Hose fill
Garden hose faucet averages around 9 GPM based on 5/8" hose. Unless we have some additional farm type water source not disclosed.

Time in hours X 540 Gallons per hour = Dumb*sse's little watering experiment in gallons

    Pool fill valve

If the pool has a built in filler, this changes things.

An average pool filler, depending onthe builder, uses 3/4" PVC with a gate or ball valve as opposed to the restrictive hose bib or garden faucet as most of us know it.

On average, 3/4" PVC tapped into the home water supply = 23 GPM

Time in hours X 1380 gallons per hour = Dumb*sse's little flooding experiment in gallons.

So thats about 8,000 gallons. Theoretically Dumb*ss is feeling sick.

Hypothetically, don't feel dumb. My pool is 35,000 gallons and I left mine on over a weekend once.

    A. Given your assumptions, the time to change the temp is irrelevant. Don't need to know hose rate either

Heat balance. Just need volume and temp, assuming density and heat capacity of water are unchanged for your, uh Dumb**s', situation

    X=volume lost in k gallons

Heat remaining in tank from un-lost water + heat brought in with cold water = Heat in final tank at 80 degrees.

    (22-x)*84 + 67*x = 22*80

    X= 5.18 -> 5180 gallons

    B. Very lucky, if Dumb**s pays the water bill.

If Mr. Dumb a ss is lucky enough to own a beach house, and smart enough to allow the wife to be there, while he can lead a nice single life alone and have fun, I don't think he is that dumb. I would call him very smart since he just created the ultimate smart marriage. :) :D

Wow, I am glad you posted this. I put the hose in the pool earlier this morning and came inside. We are getting ready to leave the house for a few hours and had not shut it off. I decided to look over F-Chat while my wife was getting ready. This is the first time I have had the time in over a week to get on so I was perusing a lot and completely forgot about the water in the pool. I saw your brainteaser and started reading it. I asked my son, who likes figuring out these sorts of things, what the answer was. My wife said, BTW, did you ever take the hose out of the pool?????Duh... Thank goodness I was only about an inch over my fill line. If we had left for a few hours I would have been in the same boat you are but my wife would have witnessed the whole thing. Thanks for posting and saving my rearend.............
