    Vincent had to take the stairs because the elevator was out of service. He had already gone down seven steps when he saw Jordan on the ground floor coming up. Vincent continued descending at his usual pace, greeted Jordan and when they passed, Vincent was surprised to see he had four more steps to go while Jordan had gone up the whole flight! Vincent thought that when he goes down one step, Jordan goes up two!

    How many steps does the staircase have?

    I think Vincent ponders on stairs beyond the norm, next thing you know he will have it down to the square feet of floor covering and how much volume of air Jordan displaces as he ascends up the staircase.

    Time to do x steps down equals time to do total steps up.

    7 + x + 4 = total steps.

    Rate is 2x faster up then down.

    Time to go down means you get x done, up you get 7 + x + 4.

    # = rate / time

    time will be held constant at t.

    Equ. 1: x = r2 / t

    Equ. 2: 11+x = r1 /t where r1 = 2 r2.

    Damn it I am getting 11 for x.

    Thus total is 11 + 7 + 4 or 22.

    Jordan you beat me by a few min! Next time post answer first explain later.
