My mechanic has just removed the rear drivers side brake caliper from my 71 Euro after a problem with the pad binding on the inside of the disc. On close inspection it would appear that in a previous life before i aqquired the car the caliper was beaten ruthlessly with a large hammer (presumably to release a stuck cylinder ??? ) The result is that now some years later the caliper itself is now covered in cracks and dangerous to use.So for anybody who might be willing to chip in with an idea or some advise.I am looking for a replacement.I understand that the only other car that used the ATE caliper was the Porsche 914-6 cylinder
but on the off chance they are on something else please shout out. Are the earlier Girling calipers interchangeable ? I read on here that some folks have fitted the wilwood calipers but all appear to be fronts only has anybody tried rears and if so whats the part number.I have The New Zealand FOC AGM coming up in a couple of weeks and will be doing about 2000kms of very serious roads so very keen to get sorted ASAP All help gladly received Thanks Danny

    Hi Danny

The rear caliper should be no problem. The ATE caliper with the integrated handbrake was also used on the 308, so there are lots of them around. I am home now and away from all my manuals. For some reason, I have the thought in my head that some of the early calipers had the operating lever at the bottom of the caliper, not at the top, which is what most cars had. I might be totally wrong on this.

You say that the car is Euro and the problem is driver's side. Just to be clear, this is the left?? I would be very surprised if GT Car Parts in the USA did not have a used caliper to sell. I do have some various bits and pieces in a box at the shop. Do you need only one side of the the two castings?

It would be tough to use an early Girling caliper as they had a separate handbrake caliper assembly. It would be much less of a project to just stick with the original ATE setup

Have you tried Dennis McCann at All Ferrari Parts in Columbus, Ohio. He specializes in Dinos. Nora will answer the phone but Dennis is usually nearby for the really tough questions. Voice 614-855-1103 or fax 614-855-2850. http://www.allferrariparts.com

Another source for rare Dino parts is Lee, the parts manager at Algar (Ferrari of Philadelphia). He is very knowledgeable concerning vintage Ferraris and has a "secret" store of desirable parts but no bargains. Try 800-441-9824 which goes directly to Parts or 610-527-1100 to the receptionist. Website is http://www.algarmaserati.com/parts/

    Good luck,

    Bill

Thanks for the help so far i will chase all those leads. I can manage with just the half that has the handbrake actuator parts in as only that ones damaged. The car is right hand drive sorry it came from the U.K same as me but now in NewZealand. I was told 308 ones were different but having read more it would seem they are the same after all. Thanks again

The 246 and 308 piston assemblies are constructed differently and the parts are not interchangeable, but the whole piston assembly can be used in either.

    That´s right.
As far as I remember the main difference ist that the arm for the hand brake on the caliper has changed from top to bottom. The reason is that the cable on the 308´s runs under the frame instead of over the frame as on the 246. If you would turn them around /use the other side the venting nipple is no longer on the top and wouldn´t work.

Showing this on the section of the maintenance book from 1118 to 02130, that, is absolutely correct, but as of the "E" series, the handbrake mechanism is on top.
Then, from 02132, the same manual makes no mention of this "slight change". On the 1975 parts book, it is there. Of course, "you know who", forgot to clarify this on the books...Regards, Alberto

Alberto you are 100% correct, there is this difference between M-serie and E-serie if it comes to rear brake calipers.
M-serie: hand brake arm comes from bottom
E-serie: hand brake arm comes from top
    regards Matthias

    Hi Danny

I looked through my box of parts and do not have any caliper halves from the unit with the operating lever at the bottom. I am also sorry to say that I don't have any good information about the caliper used on the 914-6. I don't know what problems you would encounter if you used a caliper with the lever at the top. It might be that the only problem would be the length of the cable to that side. Since I am a little bit closer, I will make some calls to the mainland USA for you tomorrow to see if there is a used caliper laying about.

A couple of other thoughts. If you wanted to get on the road and could do without a handbrake for a while, it might be worth putting an Alfa caliper on. I think that the Spider and GTV calipers are the same mounting but do not have the handbrake mechanism. The Alfetta rear calipers do have the integrated handbrake but the mounting bolts are on different centers. The Alfa rotors are thinner so you would have to use the caliper half spacers from your old unit.

    Are you confused yet???

The Porsche 914-6 calipers are the same as M-Series 246, with arms from the bottom.
