On my 1980 308 the brakes aren't feeling as quick to the grip as usual. Especially on startup I feel less confident about playing chicken with highway traffic.

Ones she warms up a bit the brakes are certainly there but I trust them about as much as a ninety year old can trust a fart.

Would you think this is a vacuum booster issue or pads? There is no screeching just brake power loss.

Is this common? Any clues on repairs? $$?

    Appreciate any wisdom

Check the vacuum lines to the booster as they age and develop leaks and loose vacuum while the engine is off.

First (and easiest) step to take is to make sure that the vacuum check valve isn't sticking closed.

probably not the booster, and very easy to check, see if you have any boost after you shut the engine off.

Your pads are most likely a performance type (maybe ceramic) requiring them to be warmed up before you have good braking, if you prefer a more solid brake without heating them up, scuff your rotors and change your pads.

If this problem coincided with a pad change then perhaps that is the problem. I am more inclided to agree with Steve about the check valve being sticky/slow cold then as it warms up, the crud softens and the valve opens.

Just pull it off, slosh it in thinner and blow dry. Remember to install in the correct direction.

While the valve is off, check the condition of the hose that attaches to the intake manifold. This is the first hose to deteriorate, because it closest to the heat, so give it a good look too.

    good luck,
    chris
