I don't often have the opportunity to drive my car really hard, but last year I had it up in the mountains and started really pushing it on a very twisty road. As a result, I got some pretty spectacular brake fade after a relatively short time. For all I know, the pads that I have may be the original ones, and their age might have something to do with their lack of heat resistance. What types of pads are you using and have you found that some are superior to others for fade resistance?

    Dan,
I can't remember the brands I have used in the past but I have been satisfied for years. Have never tracked the car but have spent lots of miles going up and down mountains. I just call GT Car Parts in Phoenix and order hard pads. There are soft and hard in various manufacturers with various availability. I have trusted their selection and pads last about 20,000 miles. Have never touched disks. The pads keep the surfaces nice and true. No squeel has ever ocured. Try calling 623-780-2200 and see what they say.

    Dan,
Good thing to check the brake fluid. Old fluid collects moisture and if any moisture gets near caliper, you have steam and no brakes. Good to really bleed brakes after pad change. Fluid should be clear. If this is your first time changing the rears, read the book before you start. There is a trick to getting the rear pistons to retract. A number of my old Sagas talked of the process (search Dino Saga Index.) Pad change is an easy do it yourselfer, after the first time. And the first time is pretty easy.

Thanks again. I'll keep the book (or rather Xerox copies thereof) handy during the process, and make note of the rear piston retraction issue. I had 2 calipers rebuilt last year, and the fluid was replaced at that time. Brake bleeding requires two people, right?

I'm pretty sure that my problem in the mountains was fade and not fluid boiling, because the symptoms went away very quickly as the brakes cooled. I've been told that boiled fluid's symptoms persist due to bubbles in the lines.

I called that number, but it was 3:00 here and I got a recording. (Probably lunchtime in Phoenix.) I meant to call back but got busy with work. Will try again on Monday.

    Rgds.

    Hi Fellow Chat member,
I too recently changed my brake pads. I am currently using Axxis Ultra brake pads. So far works well.. I purchased them from Nicks Forza.
    hope this helps

I just had the rear calipers rebuilt and went with PorterField R4S pads front and rear, with Motul 600 fluid. The brakes are fantastic now and I am more than pleased.

I know someone who has a nice set of Porterfield pads for a Dino, and he's right in your neighborhood...

    Oh, URO....

If he won't shed his, Daniel at Ricambi has them.

Thanks, though there's no reason that Uro should part with his. I'll source some new ones. I did check through the records, and found out that the current pads were installed at 25,500 miles in 1991. So, they only have about 6000 miles on them, but they are 17 years old. No indication of what brand they are.
