Hi - new TR owner ('87, 18K miles, Black/Tan, gorgeous and most pleasant to drive). Changing brake pads (still probably the original Galfers), and have never seen these shim plates between pads and pistons. Parts manual seems to show various thicknesses - do they do anything ? Can they be pitched without any effect? Thanks, and am enjoying ferrarichat.

How many other parts that Ferrari spent time and money putting in that car are you going to throw away?

Sorry but not understanding it's purpose isn't a good reason to get rid of it.

Those "shim plates" are for helping to reduce noise (in the TR WSM they are called "vibration-damping plate") -- they help decouple any fore-aft or up-down motion of the pads from the pistons.

If you are using the TR parts diagram at Ricambi America, it is a little confusing because they have (incorrectly) mixed all the item numbers together and then listed them all in numerical order. In the upper figure of the larger front caliper, item 21, is only the item 21 shown as "Plate" = PN 128869 (and does not come in different thicknesses). All of the other items 21, called "Shim", in the RA list (that do come in different thicknesses) are item 21 in the lower smaller rear caliper figure -- looks like a washer and are used to center the caliper to the rotor.

Daniel -- You need to have two separate lists of item numbers 1 thru 23 for the front caliper and 1 thru 21 for the rear caliper as in the printed TR SPC.
