I have a 1983 308 Q V. Noticed that when I press the brakes the first time I felt pretty normal for the second pump..... not normal ...the car is at the Ferrari dealer now in Charlotte, NC. They say it's a leak in the vacuum brake system. They say they cannot find a part for this anywhere in the country. And if they can it's about a $5000 part. Does anyone have any experience with this. Rebuilds. Any idea what they may be talking about. I am not technical.

Did they say which part was leaking? Booster perhaps? Booster can be rebuilt.

    $5.000 is ridiculous.
If it's the worst case - a faulty brake servo booster - it's around €2000.-- for an available exchange part from Ferrari UK.
Be cautious with such statements. Not that they charge you $3.000 of akquisition costs ;)

My brake booster recently failed(85 QV). I sent the old booster to 'Booster Brothers". They were very knowledgeable and turned it around very quickly (really great people with excellent customer service) I spent about $200 USD including shipping. My one way vacuum valve was also defective ($80 USD or so). They usually can be repaired by cleaning. My could not be saved.

Karps is quite good. Very knowledgeable! Knows the Benditalia boosters and has amazing parts supply. I was chasing a Dino booster problem 'cause I thought parts were unavailable. Karps fixed it once and has been great ever since. If you open the booster, there are parts you really can't re-use. Seals which take a set and will not return to the same position won't work correctly.

Can you sat "Ferrari Dealership"? If it can be driven, get it out of there...if not, tow it! Disgusting! These cars should rarely be taken to a dealership...unless you own it

No "old" car of any brand should EVER be taken to the dealer. Try taking your 1969 Hemi Roadrunner to a dealer for a tuneup if you want to spend a day being highly amused when the mech:
    1. can't figure out where to plug in the diagnostic computer.. ;)
    2. has "heard of" a carburetor but has no idea how to adjust it

Clean the check valve first and check it is working properly (suck on it hard-- opens one way but not the other.) It's on the left under the coils. Then check the long vacuum hose that goes from the check valve, through the left sill to the booster. Block it at the brake servo/booster and put a vacuum on the other end to see if it holds. I'm changing my heater hose and vacuum hose and it's not easy (even with the left fuel tank out!)

I would say the first job is to ask in the local section here on fchat for an independant that is used to working on cars of this era and 308s in particular. Once you have found one that others can recommend, let them find the leak and fix it. As others have said, it should not be close to $5000.

Karps Power Brake did mine. I think it was closer to $1000 but they powdercoated and stainless-sleeved the master cylinder and re-plated and restored the booster better than new. I bought a $12 aftermarket replacement one-way check valve (which connects on the driver side of the engine).
