Hello, I would like to ask your opinion on a Ferrari 328 GTS I was just offered. It is for sale in Auto Salon Singen, and has 119km and no registration. It seems to be in mint condition, and is a really stunning combination, a red exterior and tan interior. Now, they offered me almost 120,000 euros with tax. Is this a bit exaggerated, or worth it? And will its price go up significantly in the coming years? Thank you

Don't forget, every piece of rubber is going to have to be replaced on that car.

A 328 with no mileage is extremely rare and it's value comes from this type of rarity. To retain this part of the value, it cannot be driven. It's not talked about much in this forum, but there are collectors who enjoy owning and showing a brand new antique. They specify criteria and have brokers seek cars out that meet the criteria. There are lots of cars which sell for lots of money which are sold without ever being advertized publicly.

If you want a car to drive, a good solid 328 can be had for much, much (much) less money. They are the enthisiasts cars, which is mostly the type of car discussed here.

Only if it is going to be driven.

That car has been for sale for about six months, first on E-Bay, then by Auto Salon Singen. It is one of the very, very last 328 produced; I seem to recall it is chassis 83117. I think her price has been calculated from the sale of chassis 80610 at 145.000 dollars last summer.

Now I do love 328's indeed, so much that I have two. And I would love to have a brand new 328 as this one, but if it would be for driving her, I guess this could be a bad idea...
These cars are tough, but rubber (among other things) ages, so most probably there will be a lot of annoying small problems to solve for quite some time. Not only will this cost you some money, but you need to have a mechanic with a very good knowledge of the 328 near your house...
AND she will depreciate a lot very fast: you will buy her for 120.000 euros; when she will have 10.000 kms on the clock, its value will be about 65.000 euros, so you will have lost 55.000 euros for 10.000 kms...not to take maintenance costs into account.

So I guess I would answer by saying that:

    - if you are a collector or want to do an investment, why not buying her for 120.000 euros, BUT she will keep that value ONLY if she does not turn a wheel and stays exactly as it is, a time capsule. And I don't believe the value of 328s will raise fast, only very slowly.

    - if you want a 328 for driving it, just wait for a nice 10 -15.000 kms car to appear, there are one about every three months in Europe; I checked two such cars last year for friends, one GTB, one GTS, both yellow with black leather. And I bought one low-kms GTS for myself with 19.000 kms in 2010.
These cars will have been driven a bit and maintained, so you will probably avoid nasty surprises; and they will not depreciate a lot, so not much money lost; and with some luck, a 328 should go to 150.000 kms without any major work to do, so the difference between a Zero kms car and a 10.000 kms car is small.

    - if you are absolutely in love with the 328, more than with any other car, and want a brand new one to keep her for you life, and don't care about costs, and don't care about resale value or depreciation, then go for her!
(And if you want to spend 120.000 euros on 328s, you can also buy a very nice low-mileage 328 GTS for 60.000 euros, and a very nice low-mileage 328 GTB for 60.000 euros, so you got the best of the 328 serie!)

    Regards.

Thanks everyone for your answer. If I were to buy it, I would probably do about 700-1500km a year. I am not planning on selling it, since I really would love to own one. One of the issues of bringing a car to where I live is that you can not register a car if it is older than 5 years old. There is a way to go around this, and that is by being the first official owner, and since this car doesn't have a registration, if I purchased it, I will be considered the first owner. However, that is only a small issue, as I can leave it in Spain. One thing that scares me is what George Vosburgh said, that every plastic will have to be replaced. This seems costly, and nerofer stated that it is important to have a mechanic near by. The closest dealership is at Marbella, about 500km away. There is going to be a Ferrari dealer in a couple of months, but I doubt any will have knowledge of the 328. If it is going to be that much of a pain to own that one, I guess buying a low millage one and keeping it in Spain will be simpler.
