If you're looking for a brand NEW speedo, I've found one in eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320432088123&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Of course I've no affiliation with this guy but as I've read on a recent thread that someone has a faulty speedo.. so here is the opportunity to fix it.
That's worth about $500.....get your Bid Snipe ready...... Note the dual range markings, I have one like that in #20405.. It avoids the North American vs. Euro question entirely..... I need one.....and we have heard all the "chips" are now gone......let's watch it.
The speedometer in mine (#19399) differs a bit. The numbers on the odometers are somewhat finer and there's a red mark at 30 MPH.
Right, we had noted the thinner odo numbers on another thread... But you don't see many of these dual range units...I suspect a Factory replacement part? It would cover both MPH/kph markets, assuming all the early sending units were actually the same pulse rate. Hey, Dr. Barry look: Image Unavailable, Please Login
I thought long and hard about how much I was willing to bid on that speedo. It would be nice to have, but as a priority it's pretty far down the list; replacing fuel lines is #1 for now. And I remembered reading on a couple posts that there are 2 sending units that are completely different. With my luck, I'd end up either having to get the other sending unit, or pulling the face off the new speedo to put on my now perfectly-working existing speedo (thanks again Birdman). Which got me thinking... are the face plates available? and if so, would simply pulling the restricting pin allow a 80 MPH-limited speedo make use of such a face plate??? Anyone know?
From my albeit limited experience, sending units and speedos are a "matched" pair. There might be some "cross-polination" in the possible combinations but I did not find any. My car is an 81 origionally with a 80MPH speedo. I was able to get ANOTHER 80MPH for chicken feed (less than $200 used is not unusual) and sent it to PALO ALTO Speedo (ask for Hartmut) and get it converted to an 180MPH for a very reasonable price. Purests, don't fret. The origional is still a 80mph unit, ID'd as such by VIN, and sitting on my shelf. Living in Germany I was able to obtain a KPH unit which made more sense and dropped it in. Nope, it DID NOT WORK correctly. Out it came. I did not drop in a REAL 180MPH faced unit which I also have, but have been told they WILL NOT WORK correctly in a car origionally with a 80MPH unit (Wife's Tale or True, I do not know) without modification to something so I did not even try. Sorry fellas.
A good gauge shop can roll it forward ........ or backward. I had my newly acquired 80MPH refaced and calibrated to 180MPH unit, "Rolled Back to Z-E-R-O." Presto, I had THE lowest milage 3x8 car on the whole FREAKING planet. Instantly shot up more than $75K worth. I just photo-documented them both (origional and "new") side-by-side with that day's newspaper. So dumb ........ so honest ............. so honestly dumb
