    The breaks work but are EXTREAMLY hard to press and bring it to a complete stop. Is there some kind of pump/vac that may have gone bad? How hard is it to replace?

    Oh you mean the BRAKES! Sounds like a master cylinder problem. I'd use the search function or maybe even browse in the Tech Section to get some answers. But Im sure someone here would chime in soon. Good luck man!

    probably got a split in the vac hose .... I replace all my hoses every 5 years, it stops a lot of these issues

    Classic symptoms of no vacuum to the brake booster. A sticking check valve in the vacuum line would be the first thing to look for. Clean the valve with some carb cleaner. It should rattle when you shake it similar to what the typical PVC valve sounds like. If it sticks open the vacuum doesn't stay trapped in the booster.
