    Brawn GP, Williams and Toyota have been given the go-ahead to take part in the Australian Grand Prix after the FIA stewards rejected a protest against the design of their diffusers late on Thursday night.

    Following more than four hours of presentations and discussions between the stewards and the various teams involved in the dispute, the FIA issued a statement confirming that the stewards believe the cars are legal.

    Ferrari, Renault and Red Bull Racing had lodged protests against their rivals because they believed the designs of their diffusers were illegal. BMW Sauber had also been due to join the protest, but their complaint was rejected on a technicality after it was not correctly submitted in time.

    It is expected that the teams will appeal against the stewards' decision, which will force the matter to go to a hearing of the FIA's International Court of Appeal.

    Such a meeting cannot take place until after the Malaysian Grand Prix, meaning that Brawn GP, Williams and Toyota will unofficially be racing under appeal at this weekend's race in Australia and would likely be subject to another appeal at Sepang.

    Just in time so all the other teams can copy it. They were just pissed that with all of their high priced engineers they could not come up with it by themselves.

    As I said in the other thread about this, it is no surprise that the stewards rejected the protest. The moaning teams now have an hour to appeal against the stewards decision.
    Then we go to Paris after the Malaysian GP.
    Max could have stopped this if he wanted to, but disharmony amognst the teams is good for him as it weakens FOTA.

    I am very happy about this. Own up to the fact that others got the jump on you and do something about it. If Ferrari and the others know what Brawn and who ever else did to develop the difuser in a different way, how hard could it be to make their own version?

    I can go with that, gives him more power to fiddle with the result's, but on the whole better news, even though it's being deferred.

    I haven't seen any pix as yet, but *believe* it could be pretty hard - Something to do with the gearbox casing needing to be redone (?) - ie, it may be a "non-trivial" exercise.

    Not necessarily. They might rather have thought those kind of diffusers were illegal.

    I think Fast_Ian is correct in stating that it's not only the diffuser. The diffuser design impacts other engineering designs such as the gearbox and changing one requires changing the others. Remember that this is all an integrated design to create the most efficient and aerodynamic package possible. One change will affect 10 other things.

    The only reason why I think the Stewards cleared this issue is because they want to make the season more interesting even if they are illegal. Williams and Toyota need all the extra performance they can get anyways.

    I mean, it isn't bad for the excitement if some midfield teams get a chance at least at the start of the season. But if it was Ferrari or McLaren who had such a massive benefit compared to their usual performance, it would be banned in a heartbeat.... see the flex floor in 2007!
