Hi, I run the 89 Testarossa with 512Tr rims with Hill Engineering spacers. I want to upgrade the brakes, front and rear. Has anyone tried the Brembo Big Brakes and discs? I am keen to learn if they bolt straight on, and if there was a significant increase in performance. I do understand the cars are touchy without ABS on the front.
Hi PV908, are you going to track the car or not? If you are not, then why not just have the standard calipers rebuild and check that the vacuum pump is working properly. The brakes are sufficient for road use. I think the almost 7000 dollars (front and rear) you will be spending on the rotors and calipers are a lot if you are not going to track the car.
if Hi Mel, can you tell me why you feel this way? What does the brembo big brake system lack? Do you know if the 512tr brakes and discs bolt straight on?
I drive a 512TR and these brakes are not Brembo.... but they sure brake like a F1 car ! Must be possible to get those second hand for a reasonable price. I cannot say if they bolt on straight away, maybe there is someone here with this expperience please ?
I have the Brembo big brakes & they do bolt right on The change in performance is MASSIVE. On the road you just need to tap the brakes w your toes On the track they are amazing
I did the big brake kit (calipers, rotors, pads, lines) only on the fronts with stickier pads at on the stock rears and the difference is very impressive. The stock brakes are very underpowered.
Have you looked into changing pads to high performance like EBC or Porterhouse to see what sort of difference a $100 dollar investment makes compared to big dollars. I think some on the forum have had good results.
I have done the conversion 4 or 5 years ago. I did all 4 and can confirm that the Brembo kit did indeed bolt right on using the machined "dog bones" which come with the kit. Its a very tidy conversion. I used the stainless steel lines also. I agree the difference is massive. The car goes from under braked to almost over braked. Smooth all the way though. I'd rate them ahead of my Porsche 911 turbo on that front now. As an added bonus they look pretty F40 too. I kept all of the original components in order that the car can be restored to factory with factory wheels at any time. Cheers
I used the porterfield pads when they still made them on my stock brakes upgraded pads are good but the Brembos are a whole order of magnitude above even the best pads. On my race 512TR I put the most aggressive pads in rear bcus at speed this helps anchor the rear which may want to come out. If you dont do the rears you could find yourself spining under braking
Porterfield still has oem replacement pads for the TR.. I just replaced by brakes not too long ago. I like the pads.. I hear alot of people complaining about noise and squeaking but I only experienced the rear squeaking on initial road test.. After they bed in they were perfect.. My only issue I have with the porterfield pads is that on the back of the pads they have a intergrated shim type backing.. it makes it tedious to refit the shim plates because the shim plates gives you coverage on the entire rear surface and that intergrated shim is more centered leaving a drop around the edges.. When trying to fix the shim plate with anti squeal spray or paste which ever you prefer it does not fit perfectly flat end to end.. there is tiny space... trying my best to explain.. let me get a prop.. the wood board would be he back of the pad.. the blue pad would be the intergrated shim type that is integrated from porterfeld.. and the last picture would the the oem shim plate (bear in mind in would go end to end) and there is your small space which makes it difficult to set pads in caliper.. The integrated shim is not worth stripping off.. it does not look easy to do.. With patience it all worked out but you have just enough and I mean just enough room to barely slide the caliper on the rotor to re-bolt.. tight squeeze.. but I would use these pads again if and when I need brakes again..
