Bridgestone will be providing the F1 teams with specially branded 'green' tyres for this weekend's Japanese GP as part of the FIA's 'Make Cars Green' campaign.

Bridgestone launched the Make Cars Green tyre at a ceremony in Tokyo on Wednesday, with support from title rivals Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa.

"We hope that the launch of the Make Cars Green tyre will draw public attention to the many environmental initiatives in and around Formula One," said Bridgestone CEO Shoshi Arakawa.

"Environmental preservation is at the centre of our work at the Bridgestone Group and we hope that this collaboration with the FIA will help to spread this ethos worldwide."

The tyres used by the F1 teams in Japan will carry green stripes in the rubber's grooves.

"Since it first launched I've been happy to help promote the very positive messages of the Make Cars Green campaign. It is a subject that goes far beyond racing," said Hamilton.

"The car is an incredibly positive thing and I think the messages of the campaign help to show us that we can all choose to drive in a greener way.

"The new Make Cars Green tyre that all the teams will be running on in Fuji is a great way to promote the campaign and a real first for Formula One.

"The sport can also help in other ways, especially with the launch of new energy efficient technologies next season."

Massa added: "As drivers in the public limelight it is good that we can help spread these important environmental messages. Green technology is the future of Formula One and we can help ensure it will be the future on our roads as well."

What's next a tire with rainbow groves? (not that there is anything wrong with that.)

First thing there is something very wrong with rainbow groved tires!

Second, there is nothing green about F1 or racing in general. It's almost as bad as the Honda paint scheme and their whole concern about helping the environment. If they were really concerned then they wouldn't be buring fuel driving around a circuit.

I've seen so many commericals for companies going "green" and its all about publicity!

There is nothing "green" about the tremendous consumption required to stage an F1 race, nothing at all.

I think it's stupid...it would be better if they had actually done something to help the environment. Like turn off the factory for 10-15 mins to save energy...

I think we've finally reached the point where the WWE and the FIA have the same credibility.

Way to read the cue card.

There is absolutely nothing "green" about the technology used to put a colored stripe on a tire.

Being environmentally concerned and careful is one thing. It is quite another to have this crap shoved down our throats every time we turn on the TV or the computer. I for one am sick of it.

So if you paint something green it becomes environmentally friendly? Why didn’t they think of this earlier?! Well done F1! If we just paint all our cars, power-stations, planes, and cows green the world will be saved. Glad that's sorted. Now what colour do we need to paint the banks to get their problems fixed?

I'm amazed that both Hamilton and Massa support this BS... well, they had to I guess. And what they said was surely written by a Bridgestone PR guy.

At 1st sight (thru the internet) it's not easy to recognize which type they use. Is it like that on TV too?
