The 348 I've just bought is fitted with RE71's. In the log book (German Kfz Brief & -Schein) it stipulates Bridgestone Expedia S-01TL or P-Zeros.

The previous owner said it's ok because Ferrari have now released RE71's. As the tyres are about the only thing our friends in green would be able to check on the car in a vehicle control, is there some paper from Ferrari relating to this release? Should it be entered in the vehicle papers to avoid unpleasant encounters of the Polizei kind?

That is a though question. I don't exactly know the German rules.
I had the tires checked on my 328 and they did not match the tires in the manual because those tires simply don't exist anymore. The most important thing is that the tires are made for a speed that lies above the topspeed of the car. It is all about safety. Why don't you call the Ferrari dealer and ask him?

Well said Ton ,and that is also the rule for Germany.
Dont care about the "old" Fahrzeugbrief with the listed "brand" you should drive.....is was in the past
Only ths size and topspeed, thats it.

Really? is the "Markenbindung" no longer a legal requirement? (in general?)

    Nein!

    Wolfgang

Went on Google after seeing your post, Wolfgang, and found this on a TÜV site:

This says that you can use whatever manufacturer you want EXCEPT - for mopeds, scooters and especially fast cars. A Ferrari probably qualifies as the latter category. Hmmmm.......

No, they only want to take care for the speed-index!
Yes, there are some SUPERSUPERSPORTCARS like the Bugatti Veyron with very special-one-off-a-kind tyres.....thats it, what they are talking about.
And this super cars have usual an extra odinary tyre size and only 1 manufactor. Same with the F50! So, there is no choice between different maunfactors:(

Yeah, I get the message - hopefully the men-in-green too! I'm gonna stop googling now as the last bit I found was:

    http://www.adac.de/Search/SearchResult/RW_HighLight.asp?RWDoc2Show=1758&RWLang=de&RWCollectionID=adac&RWQuery=reifenbindung&URL=http://www.adac.de/Tests/Reifentests/Rund_um_den_Reifen/Wegfall_der_PKW_Reifenbindung/default.asp&RWCookieValue=

which shows German bureaucracy at its best. It says "you don't have to fit a special manufacturer's tyre but...... if you DO, then YOU are responsible to prove that all of the testing has been done, the tyre is safe on your car etc. etc. etc." Arrggghhhh! Now I know why I like France so much!!
