I am having my speedometer and Tach sent out for repairs. I thought I might just put in brighter lights while I am at it. Does anybody know where to find them? Is there a kit of lights offered by any part supplier? Thanks alot.

the brighter bulbs put out a lot more heat. I tried the brighter bulbs, but for the heat reason I chose not to put them in--my fear was that they might melt the plastic on the tach & speedo.
I'm sure others have some input.

I've updated my previous 308, and current 328....don't worry about the heat, it is not a problem. The bulbl update has been performed by dozens of owners over the past many years.

I will admit, that just bypassing the reostat makes a significant change. I did both in my 308. The one odd thing I have noticed, is that the tach lights are never as bright as the speedo when you do the change over. That is they are not quite as bright (even) as the speedo. FWIW. So it might be preferable to update the tach, leave speedo along, and by pass the reostat. This should make things brighter, and even between the two.

I agree, the light upgrade helps, but still leaves some to be desired. Especially the upgraded tach which is still pretty dim. Still vy hard to see at night.

I've been meaning to look into some of the new high brightness white 12V LEDs to see if I could adapt them to fit. They're very efficient, generate very little heat.

How hard is it to take out the instrument cluster on a 77 308?

    What are the bulb numbers.

On a 27 year old car is this going to be problematic??

    thanks,
    chris

great article, thanks Steve. I'll give it a try when the suspension is rebuilt and I have stopped the gas smells. Love the car.

    thanks,
