As I recall, the only other thing mentoned was to bypass the dimmer on the main dash binnacle but before doing that I'd clean it with electronic switch cleaner spray and fit new bulbs first.

I keep meaning to do mine but never seem to get around to it.

    Hi

When I replaced the bulbs in the dash I used a product called Stabilant - which is a military grade product that acts like a fluid solder weld and increases connectivity, electricity flow etc.

    ALSO

If you live in the UK a dashboard light failure is now an MOT failure. !!!

I did by-pass the dimmer and the result is ok... although, you must remember that in the 70's the light technology was not even close to what it is today... so, in a dark night, you can hardly see rev's and speed, have an idea that oil is warm... not sure you can be sure of the clock reading :)

On the other hand, what the hell is the dimmer use ? how many times did you adjust it in the past, say, 1'000 years ???

On long distance over-night runs, I find that dimming the dash lights lessens eye fatigue :D

fair enough :-D I'm misled by the fact that I usually drive short runs... and don't give a lot of attention to instruments... other than rev's and water temp :) !!!

No matter how long you drive at night there will never be light induced eye fatigue in a 400. EVER! *<|:O)

    No problem.
    Don't forget the oil temp.

You're right there...with the growl of the V12 Colombo, kind of referring to dimmers in general.

anyone changed to LED? not seeing what is going on makes me feel very uncomfy. I drive my car long distance at night and using a flashlight is really sad.

Yeah, I went to LEDs (available on Ebay, lots of suppliers) and bypassed the dimmer. The good news, the lights are bright--the bad news, the color is quite blue. So either you should replace all the bulbs with LEDs, or get used to the fuel/temp gauges looking different...

There is a lot of discussion on this thread for 308's, I think, so my suggestion is to look for higher brightness standard bulbs first.

    That's the 'big' reason I won't go there :(

+1, that's your best route, along with either cleaning the dimmer or bypassing it.
