    Final Auto Mileage Standards Set

    By RYAN TRACY
WASHINGTON—The Obama administration on Tuesday will make final new fuel-efficiency standards for passenger cars, pickup trucks, and sport-utility vehicles, according to people briefed on the matter.

The people said the final rule will set an average fuel economy requirement of 54.5 miles on a gallon of gasoline by 2025 for each auto maker's fleet, the same level the administration initially proposed in November 2011.

That standards, which are to be phased in between 2017 and 2025, had been expected after the Obama administration negotiated the details with auto makers and other stakeholders last year.

President Barack Obama has often mentioned on the campaign trail his plans to raise the average fuel economy of vehicles in the U.S. He says that will help the U.S. achieve greater energy independence.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has criticized the fuel-economy standards. Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said last week: "Governor Romney opposes the extreme standards that President Obama has imposed, which will limit the choices available to American families."

The regulations call for a 5% average annual increase in fuel economy for cars and a 3.5% increase for light trucks through 2021. After 2021, both would face a 5% annual increase. Credits for technologies such as solar-panel roofs and battery-powered vehicles could allow auto makers to comply without reaching 54.5 mpg. The plan also offers credits for hybrid trucks, alternative fuels and other ways of improving fuel economy in ways that often don't register in traditional Environmental Protection Agency mileage tests.

The EPA and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimate that the additional technology required on vehicles will cost consumers $2,030 toward the purchase price of vehicles, but that the lifetime fuel cost savings in 2025 would amount to more than $6,000, saving consumers a total of $4,400.

I guess the original Mondial was a 4-cylinder back in the day, so it would make sense.

Not sure what the WSJ article has to do with Mondials or Ferraris, specifically, though.

If Ferrari wants to still sell cars in the US in 2025, the fleet average has to be 54.5 miles per gallon. They will likely bundle that with Fiat/Chrysler, but expect smaller displacement and smaller engines coming soon...

We have a 4 seater convertible. It's called the California. Do not see a need for a 4 cyl one.
