Years ago, I used to post on here helping my dad with some troubleshooting with his 360 Spider. Father's Day marked five years of the car sitting up on top of a lift in his garage without the key ever being turned. I brought up that fact with him at lunch yesterday and decided to attempt to convince him to sell the car to me. Surprisingly enough, he actually agreed.

The car sat untouched for so long because he was having issues with the transmission (gated six) and never bothered fixing it.

Long story short, I met him at the bank this morning to exchange a check for the title and this car is my problem now. Lol.

The only thing I've done to the car so far is replace the battery. I switched the key into the "on" position to ensure I had power but I did not start the car. I left the key on for about five seconds and heard a squealing noise that I'm assuming is a fan belt.

What precautions should I take prior to starting the car for the first time in five years?

    Thanks for any help!

I would at a minimum drain all fluids before trying to start a car after sitting for 5 years.....

Best answer is to bring it to a professional. Tell him the history of the car and let him sort out the details.

Definitely on the pre-flight to-do list!

    LOL, sound advice for sure.

Definitely the smartest option. Scheduled an appointment for next week. We'll see how that goes. Fingers crossed.

If it sat that long I would definitely recommend regularly checking your coolant for a heat exchanger failure. That could also potentially cause some gearbox issues. Also, the fans are electric and thus don't have belts.

    nice! congrats! and gated too!

You have to do a full major, change the belts and all fluids.... also look at your fuel lines...see if the rubber hoses are sweating.

Hm, the elephant in the room is "what is the gearbox problem that caused the car to sit for 5 years?" I assume that did not go away by itself.

Surprised to hear there was a problem with the gated 6 speed. Most guys here tell us they are maintenance free and that it's the F1 that is possessed by demons. :D

All the posts above are good advice. Just fully vet the guy you choose to do the work. Sometimes the dealers are not the best choice. And sometimes Independents simply want the opportunity to learn on your car.

Also be careful operating the top. Whether it's up or down, the hydraulic system may have some dried hose issues. And a hydraulic hose burst is not pretty. just my .02

    Congrats, sir, and enjoy!

Not maintenance free, I have changed two clutch distribution blocks, clutch at 24000 due to leaking slave cylinder, master cylinder, shift bushing, cable adjustment, etc. Wouldn't trade it for an f1 though. Too much fun rowing gears.

To be sure, an ailing 6 MT is less expensive to repair than an F1 as well. And I get the allure of "rowing gears". But I have driven a 6MT 360 and the "rowing" part was my major objection. It felt like a 1960's muscle car 4 speed with the gate and the long shift throws. It felt to me like an outdated trans in a far too modern Ferrari. I wouldn't trade my F1 for it. But I get it as every modern 911 I had was equipped with a stick.

Good on you and enjoy it sir!

I presume you have the svc rec from your dad.

    I would start there.

    fluids,
    Belts tensioners

    check for codes

trouble shoot trans. Could be simple shifter bushing, which is easy cheap... see if he was having trouble shifting into gears.

    gl great car
