A friend of mine needs a mech in the Fort Lauderdale area for a 1974 MG he's going to buy. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Try Tim Stanford @ Foreign Cars in Fort Lauderdale 954 764 7824. If he can't work on it, he'll recommend a place.
I didn't think to call Tim, thought he only worked on Ferrari, but I'll have my friend call him, thanks.
Call Hayes at wirewheels.com in Vero Beach. He can probably recommend someone in the area. He uses Eagle Automotive which is next to his shop and they have done good work at a really affordable cost on cars for friends. Their is a local group which is the Gold Coast British Car Club that puts on events in the area and has a big show in Boca each year.If they have a website it might give info on local repair places. I had a 1975 MG. The pre 75's with 2 carbs and without the rubber bumpers are more desireable, but some of the 75's used unleaded gas, so nothing had to be updated.
The GCBCC must tune their cars for efficiency. The only drive I took with them was from Jupiter to Sebastian, and it took us 4-5 hours. I don't think I ever got out of second gear. Maybe I was just comfortable at a quicker pace, but I could not believe how slow we went. Nice guys and all, but, step on the gas buddy! BT
Most older British cars have no power and a low top speed. I got my MG up to 80 MPH and was doing about 4500 rpms and it sounded like it was going to blow up, since I think the RPM needle was in the orange zone around 5000 rpms. It also had emission controls and 1 carb so the total horsepower was only around 90. But it was fast compared to my Diesel Rabbit that took about 18 seconds to go from 0-60!
