Not sure. Alex may have retired. Richard Veen was also very helpful long ago. Always got a nice 'Ferrari' Christmas card from Richard!
I'm not sure if I ever crossed paths with Richard. I bought quite a lot through Alex over the years. A quick check and I see he is still occasionally active on ebay (cadillacalex), but seeing most of his items came from the international motor show, that avenue has pretty much dried up.
The bread & butter for Alex Barton-Hibbs were the press days for the major European Auto salons. When they stopped issuing paper press kits he was more or less out of business.
So am I right in assuming there are no further hardcover sales brochures being produced by Ferrari for any of their new cars now?
Not for the mainstream models. There might still be specials produced for the depositors of the VIP cars, buts it’s sometimes difficult to find out. Interestingly I was shown recently photos of Purosangue and 12 Cillindri hardback brochures which were reportedly produced by someone not associated with Ferrari, possibly originating in China. They looked quite professional but apparently the production quality was a little off. Someone filling a gap in the collectors market.
I've never heard of someone making their own version of a sales brochure before. That's very interesting.
On ebay there are softbound brochures for both 12 Cilindri and Purosangue, edited using pictures from press kits. It's clearly stated they are not Ferrari publications, but the publisher (reported as "DIMS") is rather unknown.
Maybe there is now a lucrative market for producing "home made" brochures for mad Ferrari literature collectors like us.
In the past some Ferrari dealers produced their own brochures. Though more like a multi panel folder than the modern 'book' that the Ferrari factory called a brochure.
I appreciate car companies are reducing the amount of brochures they produce in this current environmental climate, but it's sad to think when you buy a US$300,000 plus car you don't have a beautiful sales book to flick through as a nice keepsake of the car I think of all the cars I've judged at Concorso events that have included the original sales brochure in their items presented on the lawn. Or the amazing publication by Nathan Beehl and Ronald Stern on the Ferrari sales brochures over the years called The Sales Drive from Maranello.
I’ve not found a source for these as yet and the prices I’ve heard mentioned pretty high But on the plus side they look impressive and content quite professionally done. I did get to see a Rolls Royce Spectre brochure which I think came from the same source which looked like it could come from the factory content wise. It was just the paper and print quality wasn’t up to brochures released by Rolls Royce. Not my photos
I really thought that Ferrari was the one brand that understood how memorabilia was intertwined with its customer base and fans of the brand. Many of the Ferrari collectors are also big Ferrari memorabilia collectors. I get bombarded with emails from the Ferrari store about the new line of track suits and sunglasses. You would have thought within that there was room for official photo books for each of the cars.
Wow they look impressive from the photos. Hahahaha. It just triggered me to get on the phone and dial the Ferrari parts department - but then I reminded myself they are non official publications. Damn it.
While more and more manufacturers do not release printed brochures anymore, they could have had them in pdf (and then it's up to you to print with your desired quality). Stellantis, Renault, Mercedes, just to name a few, propose downloadable brochures (I do not know if they release limited prints, AFAIK there are no printed brochures at dealers, and they're not available at motor shows either).
I recently spoke with someone who provided marketing material to one of the supercar manufacturers. They shared that as well as providing electronic pdf brochures suitable for emailing or downloading, they also prepared artwork for the brochures for printing in case dealers/importers wanted to produce a run.
