Well my drive to monterrey ended about one hour from the start at Auto Gallery in Calabasas Ca with a broken gas pedal cable. I broke down on the 101 freeeway just north of hwy 33 to Ojai but managed to coast off the freeway to hwy 1 at Emma Woods beach since I had built up quite a speed. I had my car towed to Auto Gallery where Rafi and Dave dropped what they were working on to try and get me back on the road to monterrey. They tried reattaching the cable, but it came up too short. In the end, they had to order a new cable and I decided not to go without the car. However, I want to let everyone here know those guys are great..they worked on my car without me beeing a prior customer.
Sorry Sal. Bummer! No help now but... Cable breaks at pulley below engine. Both ends of cable are the same so cable can be reversed with a flexible part of cable running over pulley. Lay cable so broken ends just touch. Lap weld/braze a 6" long piece of 1/16" welding rod (piece of wire coat hanger) between broken ends. 3" on each side is plenty strong. Rigid splice then goes forward through chassis tube. Attach ends. Make your run and then order new cable. Just have to make sure that ends of splice can't hang up on anything. I did this once a long time ago. Worked! John
John..thanks for tip...you are very resourcefull...the mechanics offered the solution to tap weld also but cautioned it was risky and could break again during trip...also sugested adapting cable from home depot after trying with original cable first, but by then it would have been too late for me to make trip as I would be arriving about midnite...too late to prep car for concours friday morning.
Sorry to hear this. Last summer Mark/J (dinogts) and I were out driving the Dinos and he also experienced the "dead pedal" syndrome. It turned out to be the 6mm fastener on the throttle linkage camshaft had backed off and unfastened itself (located in the forward area of the engine compartment on the driver's side). Reattached with a nylock and no problems since!
We were lucky that the fastener hadn't fallen off of the little bracket and out of the car. Thank you Scott!!! (And thanks also to the guy whose house I parked in front of). Mark
Sal, Brings back memories of a couple of years ago. Seriously, glad to hear that it wasn't anything major and that you were able to get off the road safely. I'm looking forward to driving up with you next year. Of course, with a bit of speed built up. Take care and have fun, Manny
thanks everyone for comments...car is back home with a new oem cable and fully detailed.....too bad its beauty could not be shared with others last week
I am sorry to hear that happened to you. I can relate as the week before at Gumball my car didn't start. I was really lucky because Sal at waterfront automobili in SF happened to be there. He tried to fix it the ten minutes before the rally but it didn't work. More importantly, HE CAME BACK just after the starting parade and fixed me up on the spot. Sal went to his shop and drove over to me across town. Then at Monterey the next weekend, he called me several times to insure everything was working and reassure me that he was down in the area. I can't express how much of a life saver he is, but I am forever grateful. It is hard to feel stranded and even with the best spirits it can be frustrating, Sal changed that experience around for me. I just thought I should share.
