Hi, The photos attached show the bolts on the left worked loose. I have 3 broken teeth on my Crown and pinion for a 1989 Testarossa. I have purchased a new C&P, but want to know how or why the bolts woked loose. Any advice will be appreciated. The company that makes the TR gears we sell says the gears are probably hardened too much. As for the bolts, tough to say but ferrari has an updated bolt for the crown gear.
Hard acelleration on bumpy streets sends high shock loads in shear through these bolts. If they have stretched and are no longer holding proper torque, it can shear the head off. Generally one goes with a bang, increasing the load on the rest and so on until one of the bolt heads ends up between the Ring gear and pinion gear....generally the second bang. At that point expensive crunchy noises occur. If all of the bolts shear, loss of drive even though you are in gear occurs. Sorry that this happened; I know all to well how you feel......
The bolts holding the carrier end cap are loose not the crown gear bolts. You would not lose drive if all those bolts on the side cap were left on the bench after a rebuild, although I would suggest they be installed .
