The 308's driven gear, part number 105544 of the "spare parts catalogue" for 1978 item number 9 of TAV.24 is broken. two teeth are broken off.

this is the lower of the three gears which distribute power from the clutch output shaft to the transmission imput shaft.

I have a 1979 308 gts. the middle and drive gear look fine, and there is no excessive wear patterns on any of the three.

therefore, I need the driven gear in question. anyone have one they will part with? price?

also, has anyone had any experiences with one of these three gears breaking?

The first time I took the bell housing off to replace the clutch the lower castle nut had backed off and this gear was moving back and forth on the shaft. I do not know for how long that was going on, but there was some wear to the housings as a result. nothing serious though. I replaced the nut with a new one when the new clutch went in. when I tore it down tonight looking for the gear noise that developed today, the nut was still inplace and tight. I am not sure that the gear being loose initially may have contributed to the teeth breaking off, as this was discovered and fixed about three years ago, and I do drive the car a lot.

The indication of a problem was when I drove the car to work today and just up the road from work the car started to make a clicking noise. If you have ever broken a gear in a tranny then you should know the noise. I trailered the car home, and took the access cover off to find the broken gear.

again, I am in need of a gear. I would rather have a used one due to cost. Where? prices?

    Thank you,
    Dan

I would be inclined to replace all 3 gears with a new set in that you had broken pieces floating around in there and who know what damage was done to the other gears. While you're at it, be sure to flush out the entire casing to remove any and all fragments.

I have a spare middle and lower gear that I would part with from a 79. PM me if you are interested.

Take a real good luck at what got worn when that nut was loose. The housing can be welded up & re-machined if necessary, transmission rebuilding shops have it done all the time. I've been amazed at what they're able to repair to like new condition!

A close inspection will tell if there's any damage to any of the other gears. All the teeth should be polished smooth against each other. Any marks should be carefully examined.

Also, have the other gears magnafluxed to see if they have any hidden cracks forming.

Those three gears are supposed to be a matched set and if the middle one is in backwards it will make a noise. Im curious to see if any noise comes from mixing gear sets. I would try the single gear route myself as well for cost reasons and if its noisey then I would change the set.

Birdman had to replace one of his drop gears just after he got his '77 308 GTB. Believe it was the middle one.

I haven't noticed any additional noise, & he hasn't mentioned it.
