Uk dino owner here. While I was cleaning my car (02382) I put my 2 1/2 year old daughter in the car so she wouldn't do any damage. Naturally she pressed the electric window button until it went down and something broke. I blame myself she is too cute to get cross with.

I took the door passenger skin off and after a while worked out the position of the wire on each of the pulleys and that the wire somehow wraps around a grooved pulley attched to the motor. The motor turns one way or the other, the wire is put into tension in one direction or the other and the window goes up and down.

The odd thing is that the design of the spindle seems to be different on the driver's side. On the driver's side the wire loop is achieved by a metal join piece away from the spindle that the two ends of the wire locate into.

On the broken passenger side i have a loose wire with a frayed end. The end that is still attched to the grooved pulley seems to locate into a hole in one of the grooves.

How on earth do you get the loose end of the wire into the hole in the grooved pulley?

Do you have to unsecrew the nuts behind the grooved pulley, push the loose end of the wire through the hole in the grooved pulley and secure it, if so how?

Any help much appreciated as am loath to involve the expense of professionals but am coming to comclusion its a really tricky job!

Am also thinking i may need to buy some more wire if i can't achieve sufficient slack in what i've got, if so what is the spec of the wire so i can order some?

Come on even moral support would be welcomed! It's going into to the garage next week. I see that superformance sell a replacement kit but hopefully the old unit can be rescued.

We are here for you! LOL!

It was no fault of hers, it just failed on her watch.

It's the exact same system as our later 308s, there's tons of threads/diagrams on replacing the cable, and cleaning the old hardened grease from the motor/gear assembly.

I have never looked into it, but I'd wager the cable is secured into the spool with a crimped on ferrule of some description.

    HTH,
    Alan

Here's a pic of all the bits, as you can see the spool captures BOTH ends of the cable, but in this photo you cannot see exactly "how"...

Compression crimp would work, hard to tie knots in that stuff!
I think it's a common steel cable, nothing special......

I just leave my windows rolled down, and throw the car cover over the whole thing......:D :D :D

Hi there Andy, when these cars were current replacement units came with cables pre-wrapped on the drum which were held in place by a tempory " horse shoe" shaped clip, once the cable was installed and tensioned the clip was removed, the cables had a soldered nipple on each end and as as the cable unwound on one side it wrapped onto the other side, you can use the old broken cable as a patern ( but allow for stretching which is tricky to judge) start by wrapping 2 1/2 turns onto the drum from both sides and add or subtract from there, hope this helps, Penny.

Iv'e been here and it is a truly hideous job. It was a few years ago so I can't remember any detail but I got wire from a ships chandler, and I remember the 'idler' pulley had got bent out of true in the original melt down, so check alignment. If it is out it will all go back together and look fine but when you use it the wire falls off and you are back at square one. You have my sympathy!

In the 308 thread they uprated to new rollers also, IIRC they had better bearings.

I'll never forget the care one FCA judge used, in judging my car, once the window begin to move, "proving" it's operational status, he checked off the box and said "that's far enough...."

cable is easy to find, just google for a supplier / rigger hardware, boat etc.

there are 2 types of cable 7x7 and 1x19... often referred to as running or standing

one is designed to be drawn straight while the other is used to go around blocks and spooled... you want to get the kind that is soft and flexes easily and will work around blocks and spools... running ( 7x7 )

get the correct diameter... and opt for the stainless steel...

I bought a spool of cable at Home Depot with some aluminum crush ends. I believe they were sold under the brand name 'King Chain'. Simple stuff that is very easy to find; nothing specialized here. Just match the size by eye to what you have as I can't remember the size off the top of my head. I remember the larger and smaller sizes were way off and the correct one is dead on.

When re-doing the spool pay close attention to the length of the cable you are replacing as the assembly is pretty sensitive to a cable that is too long or too short. For sure if you are down to a couple of strands you want to change the cable NOW as it is a ton more work to do it when it breaks.

    Rob,

Thank you for the Home Depot tip. I went today and got some 7x7@1/16 cable. I'll try to put it together this weekend. With the door card off, I've got a bit of F40 vibe going on. :)
