Broken KM/Miles counter

Good afternoon,

took my TR for a walk last night and noticed that KM/Miles counter on the center consolle does not work anymore. Understand this is electronically driven (not cord). Can someone guide me as to where the sensor is located ? On the bellhouse there is the speed sensor but believe the miles counter has its own.

I think the sensor is on bottom of the transmission. It looks like a small cylinder, 2"X1", that screws into the transmission with two wires coming from it. At least that is where it is on the Boxers.

However, if the speedometer works, I would be more inclined to suspect the speedometer/odometer gauge itself vs. the sending unit.

 

What year is you TR. Early TR's had the odometer in the center cluster area. No odometer on the speedo. My 90 TR has the odometer on the speedo. I know that there is a unit on the trans. housing but I am not sure if there is a secondary one for the TR's that have the odometer isolated from the speedo

Dear Ferraristi,

If your speedo is working, it's not the sending unit on the bottom of the gear box. If you pull the wire plug on the sending unit ( just behind the oil filter ), your speedo won't work.

Since your odo is in the speedo, I would assume it's an internal problem. Even though the speedo is electronically driven, the odo is still turned by gears. I had a plastic odo drive gear go out on a Porsche many many years ago.

Perhaps it's an internal mechanical issue.

Ok.....what does that mean?

Center cluster in the dash pod or center of the dash?


I have a 91. My odo is in the speedo in the gauge cluster.

Good to see you caught yourself... I know.. I know too busy catching up on your Miami Vice reruns. I think he means odometer on the center console.. Just breaking some chops.. Hope your well

Yeep... odometer is on the center console where the oil temp and gas gauges are.

Seriously, I got confused when he said center cluster.....should have said center CONSOLE. OK, I don't know if the sensor wire splits to the speedo and the odo. I would imagine so. Doubt it's a case of two sensors.

....I could be wrong though. I don't have experience with the split speedo/odo
