    Hi everyone,

My name is Mike and I recently finished recommissioning an early 82 (July 81 production) Mondial 8 with my Dad and uncle. The thing really is a blast to drive and it draws smiles all over! We're looking forward to actually driving the car, both due to the lower overall value of the model and the relatively durable drivetrain.

One funny thing I noticed recently when driving the car is there's an actual stop pin on the speedometer at about 85mph. I thought the "don't worry about this" red line above 80mph was entertaining enough, haha. I never approach 85 on the street, but does anyone know if "pegging" the speedo would hurt it if we ever tried a track day or something with the car?

    Nice to meet you all!

hahaha, yes - this has to do with the old school speedometers not being accurate below a certain speed and above, it's pretty funny. Welcome to the club! You will enjoy her!

I have to say, with the 16" wheels (we immediately dumped those terrible TRXs) and new tires, the speedo is dead accurate up to at least 70 according to GPS. I was impressed! Now I just need to track down the intermittent signal loss... I'm hoping it's a loose connection at the sensor, but we'll see. The first 1000 miles has been virtually trouble-free, though!

I had the same issues, sent the tach to Palo Alto Speedometer and bought some Kia CPS for $10, easy fix.

    Thanks

I'm crossing my fingers it's the speed sensor only because I noticed when the tach dips the odometer also briefly stops, but I'll keep that in mind as well.

Yep! July 81. It has a sunroof but I'm not nearly brave enough to try it

Good question! Tach problems is one of two (or both) bad gauge or bad rpm sensor, let me find the thread for the Kia cps sensor replacement

    Michael,

Yes, speed sensor sound like your problem.
Also the connector under the car can get oil soaked causing your signal strength to drop.
Check also the connector by the dash, unplugging it cleaning it with a small wire brush ( get one from a gun cleaning kit) then reconnecting can help. maximize the signal strength.

You can also remove the tachometer find the calibration pot I think it's on the right side of the tach mark the zero position then spray it with some contact cleaner move it back and forth, and spray with deoxit put it back in the calibration position and see if it works, that cured mine

Good tip, thanks! There is seepage from the transaxle so they sounds like a likely factor. I'll find out soon enough!

    That's good to know, thanks!

Hi, I realize this is an old thread, but I have a Mondial QV 1985 and I think the speed sensor has broken because miles counter has also stopped and tacho works fine. Trouble is, I'm not sure what is the part number: I have come across the following possible part numbers: 116987, 119052, and even Maserati #393650106. Can anyone help please? Thanks.
