I think he is probably right that there are no drivers who will be fully content with their career. They will all have 'what ifs'.

So what he's basically saying is he should have acted the way that Hamilton and Schumacher have been criticised for?

Oh heck, we ALL live 'what if's' every day.

We don't necessarily have regrets about some or any of the paths we have chosen, but there is no doubt in my mind if I would have stuck to it, I would have retired after 12 years in the NFL and lived happily ever after. (I stopped football after high school).
Maybe I should have taken that job offered to me 1,500 miles away in Los Angeles 22 years ago. Maybe I should have taken that job offer in St. Louis 24 years ago. Maybe I should have finished my Degree 28 years ago (which I am now finishing). Maybe I should have hit on more women in the bars I used to frequent..... and lastly, maybe I should have bought that 1968 330 GTC for $6,500 that needed a motor overhaul 26 years ago.........
