Ok ok ..i ordered the dvd ..!
i believe a mr. george owns the repro . it doesn't look as good as it used to , but sstill goes like a bat out of ...........
The car in the movie was a replicar. Modem mfg I think created the fiberglass car on a custom frame using a small block Ford V8. Precision Auto took over the molds and was selling copies for awhile then they went under. Sure wish someone was around to purchase a kit to build of that great car.
There used to be a Ferrari hanging from the cieling at Planet Hollywood at the Mall of America with no motor or trans. They claimed it was a real Ferrari and the car Ferris drove. But you could look up at the car and see it was fiberglass. It did have a tube steel frame though. There were more than one made, probably by the company Daytona Rick named, but I think by now everyone who has one tries to claim its from the movie. The car at Planet Hollywood was neither real, nor in the movie, its just "looked" like it. When I finally pinned the manager down he came clean.
Yea, thats right. On the Audio commentary of the DVD John Hughes said that the car used in the movie was a replica, but several of the close-up shots were of a real California Spyder owned by one of the producers. In fact the close-up shots are so tight that you cannot even tell that they were shot off the set. They are the 2-3 shots of the air vents, the hood badge, etc.
that would have been a funny thing to watch him squirm about trying to word himself according to policy - only to break from a 'car guy' asking the right questions good work!
That's the first I've heard of it being on an MGB. I've heard it was based on a Datsun Z car. Kits are still being produced for the Datsun Z cars. Real California spider? That is very interesting. I always thought it was just a kit made for the movie. Are there any photos or documentation for this Real California Spider, I'm very interested in learning more about it.
That is what Hughes says in the audio commentary on the DVD. If you watch the DVD and listen to the commentary when Ferris and Cameron first go into the garage you can hear him talk about it. Right, wrong or otherwise, that's what the guy says and my extent of knowledge about any of the cars used in the movie.
The car destroyed in the movie was a Modena (California Spyder replica). That California company was moved to Phoenix and the replica was improved and renamed CalSpyder. All of the rights, molds, and parts ware recently sold to Mike Renucci (retired Jaguar/Ford design engineer). He is building these replicas again in Phoenix. The link to his web site is http://www.kitcar.com/calspyder/home.html. I have visited his shop and have pictures if anyone is interested. He has several that are in various stages of construction. He plans to build 10 per year. Being an automotive engineer he is making a number of improvements to the car.
Cameron: The 1961 Ferrari 250GT California. Less than a hundred were made. My father spent three years restoring this car. It is his love, it is his passion. Ferris: It is his fault he didn't lock the garage.
I know I have read the MGB statement in the past. the gauges match an MGB and the taillights look to be off an early B (62 to 67 style). MGB guys shoehorn v-8s into Bs all the time - but not 5 liter fords that some movie trivia website says the Bueller replica has in it. . . .
it was a Replica (kitcar) http://www.fast-rewind.com more info: http://www.kitcarmag.com/featuredvehicles/5531/
