Just wanted to let you guys know that I just had a garage built on my property out in Enumclaw, and while the end result is pretty awesome, I have to say that my builder sucked for other reasons. So, anyone considering building a garage in my area should ask me first who my builder was and I can fill you in on the details of my building adventure. Just thought you guys might want to know!!!

Here is a link to my project this year. The contractor was Northwest Garages and I highly recommend that everyone STAY AWAY from these jokers. Because of my own background in construction I called them on a lot of substandard work. After repeated failures to correct these deficiencies properly I opted for a cash discount and fixed the crap myself. I am still pissed at these guys!

    Anthony,
I know of an excellent concrete man ( independent ), and a damn good carpenter, sheetrocker, electrician, and roofer. All one guy ( also independent). He rebuilt the back end of our house and added a kitchen with excellent results here in the Auburn area. Let me know if you or anyone else interested.

Me again, Anthony. I just talked to my neighbor who is the concrete guy and his neighbor who is a civil engineer and backhoe operator. Both excellent people and builders and they aren't limited to this area so anybody who needs good work done , I have names.

I don't think he needs anybody now, it's already built.

I knew dat. Just trying to pass the word on to anyone else thinking about building a shop or a garage. Seems like I hear about somebody getting ripped off by builders at least once a month.

Thanks for the info, but like the man said, it's already built now. I did just notice last night that due to the concrete in one are, one of my doors will not lock closed as the door cannot go low enough to let the sliding lock into the cut out in the channel. Not a big deal as that can be fixed. But, it's just stuff like that, that pisses a guy off. Now I am just waiting for the concrete to cure so I can wheel my car in there and do some fun mods.

Remember, there a few few builders that frequent these rooms in cyberspace ;-) The thing that actually makes my building business successful, and one that has lasted for three generations (I'm the three), is that there are so many bad builder's out there, for lack of a better word. Everything in this industry is gray, and it's so easy to take advantage of situations to increase profit. Just be honest and do quality work and the work never stops. Good work does come cheap, but poor workmanship is expensive.

When looking for a builder, always go with reputation, and always call references. I even had a guy ask me once for the name of a bad reference, after he spoke with 4 good ones. He said no one is in business as long as your family without a customer that is less than happy. He was right, so I hesitantly gave him the name and number of that customer. While this past customer did express some dissatisfaction, he also admitted that we were always respectful and we always returned his calls, and that we did try to please him, but we just didn't go far enough in his wife's opinion? Later I had to explain my side, and I ended up selling a million dollar plus house to this person who had asked for that reference.

There are a lot of great websites about selecting a contractor to do work, use these resources and ask the hard questions.

Well, you live and you learn. I would have thought my builder was decent seeing as how he has been in Enumclaw for many, many years. Oh well, it's done and I need to fix some niggling problems and I'll be happy. One problem facing me now is how to heat the place. I am thinking wood stove....that seems to be the most cost effective for right now.

Remeber that anyone can buy a pretty white truck and slap a sticker on the side and call themselves a contractor. Keeping in mind that with every bad contractor comes a handfull of bad subcontractors. Talk to people, stay away from the phone book and don't always go with the low bidder. Educate yourself before you GET EDUCATED with a $hitty job. A lot of people out there that give "the good guys" bad names. Sorry to hear.....I assume you've paid him 100% as well????

Only cards you hold as an owner is the money....don't ever give it up too quick.

my 2cents......my doors are always open for free advice to all that chat here as I'm sure they are for '77 308GTB.
