http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2008-02-04-Alcatraz_N.htm?loc=interstitialskip This irks me off, it's one of the few museums in the country I ever had interest in going to, and they want to destroy it for a pointless waste of money.
Whatever? They don't call it the "Left Coast" for nothing. Let's see if the voters really want to trash one of their biggest tourist traps.
alcatraz brings in more money for san francisco than possibly any other tourist spot, i can't believe that they would actually go through with bulldozing it. come to think of it, isn't it a national landmark?
This Lacayo dude is going to have to settle for loving the wayward whales that occasionally swim by the island!
The Global Peace Foundation? What sort of tree-hugging hippy crap organization is this? Alcatraz is a landmark known world-wide. I remember going as a little kid, and I'd love to see it again. All these bull**** "we want whats best for humanity" bastards all want to tear down landmarks and historical buildings for some sissy crap. Can we lock these ****ers up on Alcatraz please?
Before that it was going to be a gambling site. Sooner or later, they are going to do something with that site, other than a deserted prison that's been looted of all it's valuables. Art
Make it a resort. I went to Alcatraz quite a few years ago and was extremely underwhelmed. There was the prison's history, but I actually thought the squatter history was more interesting. I just think the place is kind of a dump, and while I don't think some Zen Temple is the way to go, Alcatraz was probably my least favorite experience in San Francisco.
relax fools, its not going to happen. No way, so dont even worry about it. They are voting to try and see if they can acquire it, which the fed gov would probably smack down, its a national park, and then they would have to deal with the whole country of people like us yelling what the hell are you thinking. not everyone in san francisco is the stereotypical hippy that is trying to move this, I doubt it will even pass through the first vote.
Hippies throughout history, have trashed the nation in various ways. This is just another example of hippie damage. I had yet to see Alcatraz as well, and I live in the north part of the Peoples Socialist Republic of California! In the movie plot, the US Air Force, utilizing F/A-18's (not current inventory for the USAF) dropped thermite bombs on the corner of the island. In real life hollywood effects, gasoline filled cannons shot flame plumes up into the air as for that fire effect. The overhead airial shot was computer graphics. Nothing was damaged.
itll still be there when you want to go, its just a preliminary vote, nothing has been even close to decided
"do we want to create something new that's a reflection of a new emerging paradigm of more progressive ideas and values?" Typical San Francisco smug.

It, too, needs only a majority of support to pass. Proposition C, the Alcatraz measure, faced tough odds from the start, as it had no political support or a plan to raise money to pay for the purchase of the prison from the federal government.
