Has anyone taken on refinishing their bumpers. My front one was obviously refinished at one time and the not so well done finish is now peeling off. The two side pieces and rear are tolerable for the moment but I need to do something about the front. Two body shops turned down doing the job and one quoted $3000 to do it.

I don't need perfection and it looks like I will be trying to do it myself, so I you have done the job please reply with procedure. Alternate if you know a shop in the Northeast that has done one, let me know who they are.

Are their new ones out there? or good used ones?

My bumper did not fall off the metal frame, they are still well attached at the moment. My paint is peeling off the rubber. It was obviously refinished at some time as there is a light colored primer between the rubber and the top black coat.

I just got a quote from Eurospares for under 200 pound sterling. I am checking on shipping cost. He says that it is the 412 type made of fiberglass instead of rubber. Can anyone say if the 412 bumper will have the same appearance as the 400? (Shape and Color)

Not exactly an answer, but the panelbeaters who repainted / repaired deep scratches in my 412 bumpers had a lot of difficulty in finding a plastic repair putty that would stick to the plastic used in the 412 bumpers. All the stuff they regularly used would "peel off" - in the end they had to buy some special 3m product that worked fine - it bonds to the plastic and can be sanded etc. The actual repainting was not that difficult apparently - they use some additives in the paint so it adheres to plastic and remains flexible. Still looks perfect after 5 years.
And it didn't cost 3 grand.

    Ken,
With all the improvements the 412 went through for the few that were produced, i.e., revamped engine (higher compression & re-mapped fuel inj,), interior updating (touch sensitive controls, power seats, & newly designed door panels), & exterior mods. (ABS/flat faced wheels, simplified chin spoiler, raised rear fascia/trunk-line, & color keyed bumpers), my guess would be the bumpers remained the same size & shape but changing materials would not be out of the question. I've often heard that the factory used whatever parts that were on the shelf @ the time which would explain possibly why Michaels bumper was rubber (suspecting his is an early version 412) & your reports of 412's consisting of fiberglass (obviously for better paint adhesion). The bumpers of the 412's look identical to the 400's & in fitment, even the lower chrome strip. I'm almost positive that the frame, fenders, & hood all remained the same as well. A 412 owner posting some measurements would be of great assistance.

I ordered the 412 bumper last evening from Eurospares. I should have it mid next week and hopefully painted a few days later. I will let you all know how it works out. I am keeping an eye out for a good rear bumper now.

Not to extend this thread too long, but I wonder how many other 400's had thick steel plates installed behind the bumpers when they were imported into the US. The plates on my car are the full width and height (plus some at the front) of the front and rear bumpers and are 1/2" thick! I definitely would not want to be hit by my car! I once flattened a road sign with my rear bumper and the bumper did not give a mm! I am sure this had to do with the 5 mph crash restrictions but did all of the cars in the early '80's get this treatment?

Peter's changed his site around & no longer lists used parts, but I remember back in April, Jan needed a rear bumper but Peter's had the rear fog lights. Give Peter a call, he's not far from you.

    Edit:
Mine does not have steel plates but I suspect it for the same reason. I wonder who else has them?? Where did your clear DOT cert.?

My car was converted in NYC, at least that is what the plate inside the door says. The business no longer exists at the address on the plate.

    Ken,

Bruce is right, Peter at Forza still has a bumper for sale. He has it listed on ebay if I'm not mistaken. The price on ebay is $650,-. If you give him a call, he will probably sell it for less than that. I can't remember what he offered me back then, I thought $350,- but I'm not 100% sure.

    Regards, Jan

Thanks for the tip. I exchanged emails with Peter and looked at the pictures on ebay ad. I want to get my front bumper squared away first and then I will call Peter and see if I can make a deal. I have not done business with him yet.

I have had a Eurospares fibreglass front bumper, painted to match the side rubbers and fitted it looks indistinguishable from the original.

    regards, Ray.
