Do any of you know what I need to do to an .avi file before I burn it so that I can play it on a DVD player?

I tried just burning it as-is but it will not play.

Nero 7 or ConvertXtoDVD is what I use. Try this website. www.videohelp.com

Lots of great info on that site.

I just found a program on my computer that does it for me.

    Thanks.

The other alternative is to get a DVD Player that actually *does* play DivX/XviD avi files. I got a Phillips player about a year or so ago, and it plays EVERYTHING I throw at it - PAL, NTSC, different regions, avis...

The player was only about $50, I think, so it might be worth saving yourself the conversion headaches and getting a new player as a backup.

I didn't even know there was a DVD player that did that. I'll have to consider that.

If I decide to put all my TV shows I have on my computer onto disc that may make it a lot quicker. Right now I'm burning one episode of top gear onto DVD and it is taking forever. Burning as an .avi took no time at all.

Just hook up your computer to your TV. Invest in a set of cables. You'll save yourself SO much time and effort.

I got lucky and my new TV's accept VGA input, so I just get a DVI-->VGA convertor and I'm set.

Check that out, if your computer is VGA, just plug that into the back of your computer and then plug in either S-Video or Composite to your TV. :)

Now you can watch whatever the crap you want without dealing with burning stuff.
