After a request in the 348/355 forum here are a few random pics of my house in Santa Fe that was built a couple years ago. It is completely built of' Eurostone', solid large pumice blocks. The house sits on over an acre of land that backs up many acres of pastureland and has about 60 full grown Chinese elms throughout. The road the property sits on is one of the last remaining sections of the 'El Camino Rea'l' in the country, it is over two hundred years old as are a few of the adobe houses on the road. Almost the entire length of the road (1 mile) is covered in a tunnel of old trees.
All of the windows and doors are a custom steel fabrication. The house is over a 120' long with an addition 'L' wing of about 50' being constructed soon. The ceilings are 14-16 feet high. Each large room is divided by a 12' high X 10' wide tempered glass sliding door/windows.You can see through the entire length of the house 120' plus the formal garden of 100' to the mountains in one sighting.
These are just a few pics I had on hand, hope you enjoy.

Great looking house Dennis! Grew up going to Eagle's Nest NM but our heart is in Santa Fe now. My brother has a casita in Quail Run up there, and I hope to buy a retirement home in the area in the next few years. Thanks for sharing your pics.

Oops, forgot to post an exterior of the house, This shot in the snow doesn't show much as it is cropped on both ends and the decks are covered in snow but it will give you an idea. There is a wing on the left side that will be all butted glass, horizontal natural wood siding and frosted glass garage doors.

Thanks, Santa Fe is growing all the time but still retains it's magic. I'm a California kid so winter can get a little old after awhile but I'm in LA about half the year so the balance is nice. There's a few Ferraris around town and even some guys that work on them. I'll meet you in Tesuque for coffee when you get here.

Sir John, Thanks man, always great to hear from you, your Ferrari is look'n prime!

Yeah, it's strange as soon as I turn onto the road and drive 10-mph under that canopy of trees a real peacefulness just comes over you, too bad I can't bottle the stuff, I'd send it off to you guys.

I love the snow here, especially at night when it's backlit by the exterior lights and the fireplace is on full tilt.

Thanks so much, It's about as contemporary you can go and still stay within the confines of Santa Fe building codes which is very territorial in nature. Besides it would look a bit out of place next to the 200 year old adobes on the El Camino Rea'l that are state historical monuments think once the addition is on I will put it on the market and design a very contemporary house out in the county where you can basically do what you want.Actually there are some guys here in Santa Fe that design and construct pretty cool modular houses called 'H Haus' , check them out on the net.

In 1981, I was an architect on the design team for a large new-but-traditional adobe house in the desert just outside Santa Fe, and remember the stringent architectural-style codes well...your house conforms very well to these, and subtly makes it's own statement at the same time, as opposed to just aping the old stuff.

We've been talking about possibly moving out there, and have been looking at some houses online. I'll check out H Haus...thanks.

Thanks Scott, you're right it's tough to design anything that's not territorial unless you're farther out in the county. Santa Fe is slowly coming around to a more contemporary look but the Southwest integrity is still a prime objective. I had a very Territorial home in Carefree Arizona for about ten years which was very warm and comfortable but thought it would be nice to go a little more contemporary on this one. Actually have started to draw up concepts for a new very contemporary home with an all butted glass living room that features a replica of a 250F Maserati as a centerpiece, it's one of the most beautifully designed race cars ever and to live with it would be better than the Mona Lisa hanging on the wall.
Heres a couple pics I snapped on the Lane last fall under the trees.

That looks like the road where my parents live. Any chance that you live on a road that has an adobe wall around 2+ acres cement grey on the outside but stucco off white on the inside, a 6' x 14' iron frame gate with latillas in it? About 12 90 foot poplar trees lining the side of the road?

Bingo!, That sounds like it (Bouquet Lane) the "El Camino Real", if that's it they are right down the road about a quarter mile.

    Thanks,
Yes, it's a little bit of heaven in a neighborhood with a lot of history. The deed to the land looks like the constitution and was written in 1860.
Mornings are very special when you look out at the horses in the pasture when sipping your coffee, evenings ditto except it's in the garden with the fountain and some Cabernet.
You have to be self motivated to work here, sometimes I give up, it's just too nice and enjoy the day.
Well , time to light the 'Q' and open the wine.

Welcome to FChat! Well I was driving up the lane and took this pic for you a few minutes ago. Looks like the County and or your folks have done some Spring pruning on the trees. It will be nice to see them branch out again for the summer. They are giant trees, I remember when I was driving down the lane for the first time about three years ago that these trees completely engulfed the lane and started the tunnel..........quite amazing! They must be very old. One of the trees by you and next to the old Polo grounds fell down last year, they say it was over 200 years old. It's must have been fun to grow up here when you were a kid. I will try and grab a few shots of the historic adobe houses on the lane and post them, all over 200+ years old from what I understand.

That is it, and thank you for the welcome!

I had a lot of fun growing up there, climbing into the lower branches of the trees and reading books was one of my favorite things. My parents did the trimming of the trees so that we wouldn't have any of the dead branches falling on cars driving by. Unfortunately, they had to completely cut down a few of the trees that were either dead or dying. Jean Bouquet was the one that planted a lot of those trees 150 or so years ago.

We are going out there to visit my parents at the end of July. They just moved from Sirerra Del Norte to Las Campanas last year and we haven't been there for a few years. I am a builder and always love looking at unique homes. Any good local rides? My father has his Murcielago out there and I will be racking up some miles hopefully.

Doug, always a great cruise north to the Durango area and Mesa Verde and to Chama and Taos. Great mountain roads, beautiful country and open stretches as well to let that Merci breath
Architectually, as you know most everything is pueblo /southwest style. There are a few exceptions but you have to search them out. There is a modular home contemporary firm based in Santa Fe called H-haus, check them out on their website, pretty cool designs and e-friendly as well.
    Have a great trip!
