There are three types or work I’ve found-/

normal main items- the work is defined and the parts are defined. Pretty straightforward stuff here…

easily diagnosed repair jobs - you can hear or feel or see the loose bit , or leak, or cracked part. Swap the parts and go…

The third area is where it gets expensive fast—.
    Intermittent faults
    Random codes

I love my 360 but I do see this third category pop up on this car more than any other car I’ve owned.

this separates the pro from the posers….

You can spend big $$ and get the car back w we think we fixed.. or we could not repeat the issue..,

I’m no pro.. but since this is a fourth car and My hobby is fixing and learning.. and there is a helpful community of f car enthusiasts — I enjoy the challenge.

the benefit a diy has over a shop— we don’t have to solve the problem while working 159-200/hr shop rates .. and the car is not taking up a valuable lift space….., we don’t have retail overhead or monthly numbers to hit….
plus since this platform is over 20 yrs old now most issues have been experienced and doc somewhere on the net.

Another tip— know when to call for help. And know your limitations… the consequences can be bigger $ than your uncles sm block ford :)

Surely you know that you have "ruined" your Ferrari by putting those funny looking little pipes on the throttle bodies and the thought of using Porsche parts on a Ferrari is close to criminal. That is even worse than a rusty bolt with an improper sized washer on the underside of your car or doing your own sticky button repair.
Some might think that this snarky remark is funny and others will get their feelings hurt. Posting on forums is risky.

A lot of us love cranking wrenches(many have posted here), are naturally mechanically inclined, and are willing to sometimes take measured risks when doing a repair, or service, that we have never done before. Those jobs require more research and head scratching before picking up the wrench. The Ferrari shop manual has all the info but the Italian to English translation and some of the unusual terms make it confusing. The 360 belt change instructions are a perfect example with the song and dance of the belt strumming and pin moving freely. That one sure is easy to understand, right?

Like RedNeck, and others, I live way out in the weeds so getting cars and trucks to repair shops is a huge pain. Almost no one does their own maintenance work on anything so I understand why most Ferrari owners think that those of us that do cannot afford to own our cars and/or we are stupid and crazy to work on our cars. Money? I see nothing wrong with NOT spending ~200$ an hour doing things that are easy since I know how to do it, have a fully equipped garage, all the tools, and, since I am retired, the time to do it. Besides, if i screw it all up, I can afford to truck it to a pro repair it no matter what it costs. If I lived in Austin, I would have Brian do the Ferrari work to give me more time to play with other things.

@ItalGerBrit - I still have the OEM bits that are functional, with their OEM clamps attached, so I (or more likely, my estate) can offer them with the car when it's sold. In the meantime, I'll enjoy working with the car and making things.

I understand purists and my car isn't for them to begin with. The interior metal parts are painted to match the exterior Azzurro California. A total faux pas. I like it though. I also drive it regularly, another mortal sin.

I had a belt service and sticky buttons done at my local dealer. They noted a leak from the RMS and we dropped the engine out to fix. We changed out the F1 clutch while we did that. Total service was $28,000.

I think you got my comment backwards. I love what you did to fix the part. I meant that you did it right and that the purists, not me, will go berzerk because it is not a "perfect" unmolested Ferrari. When I said it was risky to make comments on forums, this is a perfect example. People cannot see the wink and nod and take it literally. I figured the guy that could not tolerate having bad looking screws on the bottom of the car would be the one that I aggravated. Not the guy that I was complimenting. I would delete my comment if I could since it was not understood.

@ItalGerBrit and you got my response wrong as I understood the nature of the comment... All good.

The closest qualified f tech to me is Atlanta. A real hike. It's DIY or get a Corvette.

Why on earth would anyone take out the engine to fix a rear main seal?

I do not even take out the transmission to do that.

Mine is close to that, but it’s 21 years old. Lots of R&M over that time, and some really exceptional care. I recall one invoice for taking the console and other matching pieces out and refinishing them. That’s not cheap work. My car has around 40,500 miles. If I replaced the slightly patina’d headlights, which I have contemplated, it would show as new.

Since I know he's in the thread, just want to give a + for @tbakowsky for anyone around Toronto, highly recommend.
I've had him assess and diagnose, and he's encouraged me to DIY the work and not be afraid of the car. (I'm in a Maserati Coupe, not a 360 FWIW).

For some of the early questions in this thread, when you connect with a local indie ask if they are comfortable reviewing/diagnosing issues, then helping you decide what to DIY vs have them do. Open communication on both sides is helpful.

Even if a car is effectively perfect, and is simply due for a major and a clutch soon that's like $12k right there in dealer pricing on the low end. It's the labor that drives the quotes. Parts I have found are not variably more expensive than any other performance oriented car I have owned. That $12K quote is probably about $4-5k in parts if you can do the work yourself. I certainly would not recommend the 360 being the car to learn automotive skills on simply due to the potential for things to get out of hand, but if you are someone with a moderate understanding of automotive you can significantly reduce your maintenance costs. The 360 has an intelligent design compared to many other vehicles I've worked on and is relatively relaxing to work on.

With Ferrari service, I always feel that there is a "wallet biopsy" done first. Costs are usually absurd but what isn't these days.

Same work to my 360 with 8,800 miles on it cost $15,000. in Atlanta. Painful!!! The 360 is now gone and a California replaced it.

Find a good local independent repair shop that works on Ferrari's. I have one that is superb and my 12 year old Cali goes there, my new Portofino goes to the dealer under warranty, then will go to the local guy. I would say more than 1/2 of the folks in the local FCA do the same thing. The pricing differential is stunning, and the quality is superb.

I’ve spent about $25k over four years having things serviced and fixed on my 20k mile 360 since I bought it. Probably would be over $30k if I didn’t do some brake and top work and other parts replacement myself. My dealer “only” charges $150/hour for labor. But, have serviced a number of important areas on on 19 year old car: tie rods, brake rotors and pads, dash top, defroster vents, bumper respray and protection film, valve cover gaskets, rollover valves, belts, fluids, alarm, windscreens, challenge grills, rear trans carrier, etc. Hoping from here on out it’s mostly service items…

My last major service was $33.5k, before the cats were re-cored, adding another $1,200.00. (Yes, F355). Plus they didn’t replace the seven year old tensioner bearings, yet charged me for them, (I caught that and had it removed from the bill), Plus they damage the car, sent it to a poor body shop that did poor work. I always thought highly of that shop, and had heard great things, guess not. Consider yourself lucky! Attached is the .pdf invoice. :(
