I know a little bit about the CIA. Two of the directors of a company I'm involved in are former CIA. One retired in 1979 and the other in 1999. The CIA will confirm past employment and allow that person to put them on their resume after 10 years of retirement from the agency. One of our directors was publicly criticized for using his CIA contacts to make money as a consultant to foreign governments. The critic was a known former officer of the CIA. The other is also easily proved as former CIA, he has reference letters from the CIA, including Bush Sr. as a former director of the agency. We checked both out.

Its similar to checking out people who claim to be former Navy seals. Navy seal membership is not classified, what they did in the seals usually is, but not membership!
