Pretty interesting; confirms what we suspected. The car was not designed to his style... Button takes blame for Schumacher form ESPNF1 Staff July 29, 2010 « Red Bull drivers suffered engine problems in Germany Jenson Button says Michael Schumacher is struggling to adapt to a car designed for him © Sutton Images Enlarge Jenson Button has accepted a portion of the responsibility for Michael Schumacher's testing return to Formula One this season. Schumacher's Mercedes car is based on the Brawn GP 2010 car, designed to accommodate the world champion's preference for understeer. Button's switch to McLaren, however, meant that Schumacher had to adapt to a car with characteristics not entirely to the seven-time world champion's liking. "Michael likes a very pointy car," Button told Germany's Sport Bild. "But the Mercedes understeers pretty strongly. I was always happy with it that way." Despite the German's struggles this season, Button does not think that people should write Schumacher off until his performance in the 2011 car can be seen. "He will have more influence on the development of the next car. This year [the 2010 car] was quite late for him -- the fundamental characteristics were in place long before his signature."
Indeed - Write him off at your own risk. I still think he's gonna win one more WDC before he's done.....
I never thought an 8th title was reasonable; I said when announced his return, that I would be happy with one win.
I'm already in the hole this season with Isobel! - I bet that the Master would score more points than young Nico this year. But, I do believe he'll get at least a few wins once he's got a car he likes, and am hopeful for the title..... Cheers, Ian
Well if it wasn't for the Nico bit, I could go along with Button. I think more than ever now MS needs a team and car built around him, plus a #2 driver, prepared to take it on the chin.
I'm waiting for Slippermacher to be told on the radio ..."Nico is faster than you..." Another bottle of Pinot says his radio wouldn't be working....
Even better swap Massa for MS and Domenicali for Ross Brawn, it would be worth it just to see the look on Alonso's face when it was announced!
Phew! What a huge relief. And I was starting to wonder whether it could have anything to do with him getting too old and loosing it. What a silly thought. After all the younger MS never had a less than perfect car. He wasn't known for driving around problems like a missing gear etc. Image Unavailable, Please Login
It's reassuring to know that you know more than Jenson Button. I stand corrected - you're starting an anti-Schumacher thread , in this thread. No need for another one.
It's reassuring to know that you take Jenson Button's statement at face value. Particularly since he has no skin in the game. It's not like Mercedes is about to gift him his WDC car soon...
I still fail to understand why MS is getting so much backlash for "not performing like he should". In my opinion he does not have to win the WDC his first year back to prove that he is still a great driver. A good driver is always a good driver.
Did you read all the predictions on here by his fans back in January/February: - The Kaiser will dominate this season and add his 8th title! - He'll wipe the floor with Nico. - Brawn/Haug/Schumacher, the dreamteam is back! - How can he not win in the WCC winning Mercedes from last year!
Wow! Do I feel dumb! I guess this refers to a different Jenson Button. I think I need to read Benoit more........... http://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-news/jenson-button-receives-championship-winning-f1-race-car-after-filing-lawsuit-against-brawn-mercedes-ar92635.html 'Apparently, both Button and Brawn GP - now called Mercedes GP - have already settled their dispute and that Button will, in fact, receive his championship-clinching F1 racer .
It's called tit for tat. Haug and Brawn are getting under pressure for keeping MS on board. There are now folks in Germany who are voicing their displeasure at MS who doesn't bring the results, but costs many millions. They'd rather see some young/unexpensive guy in that seat. In that light a comment like the one from Button helps appaise the critics.
Button isn't the blame. No one is to blame. MS likes his car handle opposite to what it's doing now. Yes, that will slow a driver down. It's only been half of a season!! In a car that doesn't suit his driving style!! All the hype was because MS, a guy who brought Ferrari 5 championships and the most successful driver ever, was coming back to race. That is a big enough reason to have a lot of hype. He didn't sign a 9-10 race deal, he signed a 3 year deal. Alex
+1 He used to be able to adapter and get the most out of any car. Yes sure he liked a pointy car better but his performances have been below useless, yet I remember the previous version of MS performing miracles in rubbish cars. He definiately is not deserving of another championship IMO. Pete
You know full well that those statements are all made by people who don't know to much about F1 and/or media. Would you be this bitter if he had returned with Ferrari instead?
