This might not be the best place to ask this buy like the title says has anyone here used a third party service to purchase a domain that is already owned by another person?

I found one that I want but it looks like it is owned by a squatter. The .net and .org variants are available and the .com (the one owned) goes to a generic Godaddy web page. I used a whois and emailed the owner direct to see if he is willing to give it up. No response yet.

Godaddy and Sedo both want $69 for a broker to facilitate the transaction. Is it worth it?

I've had a very poor track record with trying to do this, for me and for clients. One squatter wanted 50K for one domain. I lol'ed @ his email, and he came back "25K then?".

I wanted to pay 500-$1000 for it. I sent him my $1000 offer and he never replied, nor will he answer any of my emails, I guess I made his permanent kill list.

Another for a client went awry, and the small ($500) paypal was taken but the keys to the domain never given. Paypal reversed it in a few months, but my guess is he got a better deal. I would recommend using a third party escrow for it if you can, or pay with someone "in your corner" like Amex.

You don't need a third party yet.

See if you get a response from the owner. If you do, he may want to use a third party. I believe godaddy can facilitate a transfer without paying them. Just setup a free account with them and have the owner transfer it.

The only time to use a third party is if you think the owner will scam you.

I have purchased many domains from third parties, check out www.greatdomains.com

I have also purchased some from individuals, but I find that is becoming harder to do.

Never had a problem, unless you count price as a problem, but to me that's just business.
