Well after exploring just about every facet I can of aviation from Airline to Helicopter to Corporate Jets to just about every light plane you can name I have fell in love with a new passion: Gyroplanes. Specifically the Auto Gyro MTO Sport made in Germany. These ARE NOT the old Bensen "death chairs" - things have really changed in the last 7 years. Now before everyone starts tut tutting about their safety, idiosyncrasies, etc, etc. take a moment and watch this.

70,000 dollars brand new. Cruises 100 mph on 3.5 GPH with a 100 hp Rotax engine. Carries 500 lbs of payload and has a 400 mile range. The rotor is completely unpowered depending only upon the air rushing up under it for lift. Impossible to stall or spin....

I'll post some pics up here tomorrow. These things are A BLAST and may be the thing that saves small fun flying from the ash bin of history...

Awesome video, that looks like fun! I had no idea that the rotors on these are unpowered; that's pretty wild.

No I am trying to negotiate the purchase of one at Oshkosh. Failing that I may wait until fall when the temps start to head the other way here in Tejas...

Not sure where you are but i saw it was Texas. I'm in Houston and i had that same thought about our heat. I have zero experience with flying, maybe if you get high enough it's cool enough to not be awful?

If the top root is unpowered how does she spool up the top rotor during takeoff?

    Otherwise, she's convinced me!

It utilizes a pneumatic clutch system to "pre spin" the rotor up to 200 rpm before you begin your takeoff roll. The air flowing through the rotor as you begin your roll then accelerates it to 350- 375 rpm at which you begin flying. Ground roll is around 100 yards with a loaded vehicle.

    Nice! :)

My dad just built a Magni M-16 Gyroplane with a 115hp turbocharged Rotax engine. He just had the FAA certification on the build done by the DAR earlier this week.

I do understand that the two serious aircraft to pick from in the gyroplane world are the AutoGyro or the Magni. As you say, they're not cheap and a far cry from the flying coffins of the Bensens.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

I see. Disengage the clutch once airborne? Or is it for the initial ramp only to get the aircraft moving forward...?

It is at the initial ramp only. It has no thrust on the ground, that is the pusher motor (A Rotax 100hp) that does that.

Ok. But the assumption is the unit is in full motion thru takeoff to maintain the rotation....?

Not necessary, the forward motion via the pusher prop maintains and increases main rotor rotation. All the power of the engine then goes to the pusher prop. If you have a long runway you don't even need the starter rotation. Just moving down the runway will start the main rotor turning.
Some gyros can do what is called a jump start. By spinning up the main rotor (with no forward motion of the aircraft) and then doing a rapid increase in main rotor pitch the aircraft jumps straight up and does a zero ground roll takeoff.

The MTO Sport looks like a fun machine.
