Looking into buying an 86 Mondial 2+2 convertible that was in hurricane Ian. I am fairly familiar with this vintage of cars as I own a few older BMW's and Porsches and I am aware of the golden saying that the cheapest Ferrari will be the most expensive one.

The body is in great shape, paint is good with no rust/dents. It was a low mile car with an estimated retail price of around 50k prior to the flood. The current owner had it running after the hurricane after changing fluids and doing some troubleshooting, so the engine should be healthy. It currently isn't starting and he's willing to let it go for 15k. It will come with salvage documentation.

He stated that a good amount of the electronics were not working when he had it running. Most of the interior is currently removed and not in great shape due to the flood. From this limited description, is this too big of a headache to consider or could it be worth the gamble? I am reading that the electronics in the 3.2 are not very complex. I am decently mechanically inclined and wouldn't mind a summer project, or at worse, I think I could recoup my money and part it out if it's beyond my capabilities.

Any thoughts or comments are appreciated. Hope someone talks me out of this. Thank you all

So a classic "ran when parked" situation because you've never seen it run.

Biggest concern I'd have is the expense to restore the interior with the damaged parts AND all the little things that could have been damaged on the interior. Do you know the level of the flood waters and how long it was submerged?

If you want to gamble, I'd consider this project at the price of the engine value itself... Say $13k-15k... But only after doing a compression test. Screw in a gauge into each of the 8 cylinders and bump the starter.

If it works, well, you can always turn it into a racecar.

I think I saw this one. Looks rough. Most of the interior was missing?

When I was a younger guy, I rebuilt many fresh water cars and made a decent amount of money doing it. Parts were plentifully and cheep. That’s where the difference lies here……

There can't be too many of these around right now.

If it were a coupe it would be an interesting project due to rarity. The convertible is the most common 3.2 Mondial. I don't see a way that you come out ahead vs just buying a good running matching car. Take the 15K and use it as a down payment.

Unlike almost every other car, parts will be almost impossible to find and stupid expensive. Ferrari owners are hypercritical about the history and maintenance of vehicles they're thinking of buying. So unless you're wanting to build a track rat I'd pass.

    Hey,

looking at those pictures above it would seem to me like an ideal candidate for a resto-mod.
Actually you have the chance to redesign the interior to your personal liking and come out with something really cool.

Of course, purists and concours d'elegance judges shall sneer on you, but who cares as long as you are fond of your creation.

You could get bucket seats of a younger Ferrari f.e. and design a sleek dash in stead of the square 80's style that is in there.
Again, it needs to get to be your car in the end, that's what counts, not the amount of likes it may get.

Anyone disagrees the samples above are some cool interpretations you can produce without losing the appeal of the original icon.

Well, at least that is how I'd be looking at it.
