I was just wondering if any of you out there has ever bought a pre-owned Ferrari that is still under warranty from an authorized dealer without doing a PPI. Can you trust authorized dealers that much? Or is a PPI mandatory regardless? Please share any success or horror stories. Thanks for the input.

I did. My last car was a 1987 328 GTS that I bought from WWOC in NY. They had just completed a major service with belts and I figured it would be a waste of time and money (I know others will disagree) to have a PPI done. Car turned out fine and the few problems that remained were taken care of by the dealer very quickly and on their dime. I think that your relationship with the dealership is more important in this case. If you buy a car under warranty and you have developed a strong, friendly relationship with the dealership staff, they should stand behind the car and clear up any problems the car may have.

personally, i'd only do that if i had a prior relationship with the dealer and they were going to be servicing the car.

otherwise, there are plenty of non-warranty-covered items you want to know about (eg: clutch wear).

it's worth the couple hundred bucks.

^ I agree. If you've seen the car, and it has correct records, it's more about who you're buying it from, and what your relationship is. An authorized dealer with a sterling reputation is not going to screw a good customer and jeopardize the credibility in the local market.

I did it. Got the car with Power 2 warranty and dealer did the 30 K on it.

No reason for the dealer to screw me as they only take in cars that they can "certify" for Power 2 warranty anyway, plus the "reputation" in this business in important. Word gets around quick otherwise. I dont deal with individuals, only authorized dealers.

This spring I bought a 2002 360 spider from somebody on this board. It had 1800 miles and was under warranty. I trusted the seller and bought it sight unseen and no PPI. Car was perfect. I don't think this can be done every time, put sometimes you can. I also jsut bought a 2003 500sl MBz under warrenty and had the service department look it over. It is being shipped to Maui and I never saw this car. I hope this works out like the spider.

Here's the situation: I am looking at a '98 456GT, which was taken in trade by WWOC from a member of this board for said member's 360 Spider. WWOC also sold the member the 456. The car was serviced at WWOC and has recently had a major. It appears to need a couple of minor fixes, but it runs and drives great. Cosmetics are first class, too. I probably will continue to have the car serviced at WWOC because they know the car and it is reasonably convenient for me. The salesman for this car also sold my friend his F430 and my friend (who tends to be paranoid) trusts this guy. This would be - have you guessed? - my first Ferrari.

So: safe to forego the PPI, assuming I move forward with the car? If not, any suggestions for a qualified independent near WWOC?

Thanks - these questions don't seem as easy when you have to answer them for yourself.

I would still do the PPI, there may be something the dealer & the owner are unaware of. It would be cheap insurance for your peace of mind

Sounds awesome, hope you can enjoy it over the holidays!

I bought my 360 CS with 2600 miles without a PPI from the dealer. Car was like new. I did have a problem initially with the car (turned out to be a simple switch) and the dealer bent over backwards to make the car right. They even did an oil change before I got it even though the previous owner had just done it before he sold it. Turns out I spoke to the previous owner and the guy was more anal retentive than I am-he still had the plastic coverings on some of the sensitive surfaces. The dealer also ran the car through the SG2 (computer) to check brake wear and clutch wear. Turned out the car had less than 1% wear in both areas with the 2600 miles that were driven.

I bought my 355 "without" and when I found the car had defective cats I went back to the (used )car dealer who provided me with 2 brand new factory cats (valued at $7000.00 cdn) at no cost to me.
So if the dealer has a good reputation then I would not be concerned.
